astro_phd_student
Has anyone recieved notice about the AAUW dissertation fellowship yet? Either yes or no?
sciencegal
Nope...should be today........?? Did you apply De Karman as well?
econ2010
I have not heard yet, but called and confirmed that they will tell us today. Does anyone else have a situation where their status, when you login, says "Recommended" but does not say "Recommend and Reviewed"? It's making me think my application was not even reviewed! sciencegal
sciencegal
Oh I forgot or didn't know we could check our status! Do you have the link to login, I'm not able to find it on the site I think because it's replaced with deadline has passed. Or I'm just in too much anticipation!! (Everytime my email dings I get excited/nervous.)
econ2010
I totally forgot that we could check status too, but then I did a search of my email on "AAUW" and looked at the confirmation email we received when we applied, and realized you can check status there! The link is: https://actapps.act.org/rpsnr/Login.do?event=go&realm=16020017&assessment=33716&applicantType=Examinee But let me know if that doesn't work for you. Do you mind please letting me know what your status says, and if it says 'reviewed'? Thanks! Yes, apparently they will post the winners on the website today. They are eastern time though, and it's approaching day's end! sciencegal
sciencegal
Haha, I looked in my email too but there were no links! Maybe I didn't save that one. Either way thanks for the link mine says "Recommended" too. Boo, I'll try not to read too much into that they for sure should have to review all apps right? We had to PAY to apply! It does say "some statuses may not apply" so I could also try and hang my hat on that.... It's 3:41 EST, very close to 5pm!
econ2010
That is so encouraging that yours says 'recommended' too. I was worrying that for some reason they didn't get my supporting documents. I tried to be really careful about that so I was frustrated if 1000 other people got their's in but I didn't get mine in. But the fact that yours also says that probably means that their system is clunky and they didn't update it after getting us to the 'recommended' stage. I'm not surprised in a way...it's strange to have an online system where they won't even confirm that they've received your documents. I know NSF confirmed receipt of everything for me! Ah, the waiting game. I need to work today, why can't I stop checking my email? :-)
sciencegal
you and me both friend! luckily my email program makes a sound and shows a little red dot with every new email so I don't have to manually check email, but now I'm also refreshing the AAUW page too! I should be working but have been futzing around with this for at least 45 min now. I gotta amp it down because so many apply and so few are awarded I don't want to feel crushed. econ2010
Here it is: http://www.aauw.org/learn/fellowships_grants/fgaRecipients2010-11.pdf I didn't get it . Hope you did!
sciencegal
Me neither. I thought I had a decent shot, but when only 2-5% of applicants get it I suppose I should not be too sad. Sigh. I'll be pretty bummed if I don't get any of the fellowships I applied for but I guess that's probably more likely than not given how many apps they all receive. I hope one of yours pans out positively!
econ2010
call me paraonoid or an overanalyzer, but I suspect that 'recommended' but not 'recommended and reviewed' is indicating that our applications were thrown out before they were really even considered, probably for random reasons. I too thought I had an amazing shot, given my dissertation is all about women's issues, and I work in a male-dominated field. oh well, as you said, hopefully the other ones pan out! Good luck to you! I'm sure something will come your way.
sciencegal
Wow, yours was even targeted at women's issues! Crazy. That's really surprising. We're both from top universities too (but I believe we are supposed to be enemies, haha)! Yeah I thought I had a good shot because my project is really innovative and emerging in the field and my advisor is the top guy in the entirety of the field -- my recommendation from him should have just slaughtered (I know the kinds of things he says in these letters). I do some women's-y stuff -- also in a male dominated field -- but really thought the strength of my project would shine through. I wouldn't have bothered to PAY to apply otherwise. If we both got tossed at the beginning for whatever random reason that's frustrating as I spent so much time on this app - those essays were long and had to be written differently than others (laymans terms, etc). Although finding out you were *this close* might be worse, haha. I'd be super pissed if it was because they didn't receive my materials. I sent them with tracking but it would be nice if they would confirm! Good luck on your NSF! Edited April 15, 2010 by sciencegal
