Interest in I/O Psych Program in 2017. HELP!

Hello all,

I just took the Gre's. I was hoping I would get a median score, but i was only able to get a 293. I'm hoping to get accepted at masters program at Kansas State University, Montclair State or Fairleigh Dickinson. Anyone have any successes getting in with my  gre stats below. 

Undergraduate Gpa is 3.0 and Psych GPA is a 3.3. I also have 7 years of work experience in Applied Psychology. Thoughts?

Hi Mike, 

I'm applying too, so I'm constantly doubting everything i've done as well. If you go to www.siop.org, you will be able to access a database of I/O programs, and they all post their average statistics of applicants so you'll have an idea of what you're up against. Good luck!

Thank You Angelo, I mean I have 7 years of work experience in mental health working in the urban areas of Newark NJ and Paterson NJ if that doesn't give me a head start on some brainy 22 year old psych student. i don't know what does! The career change may impact me I think. I'm DEFINITELY not taking GRE's again.

The mental health work experience isn't directly relevant to an I/O program, so I wouldn't emphasize it in a personal statement unless it somehow links to what you want to do with this degree. GREs and GPA are often used as the "gateway" to consideration, meaning that they won't guarantee you an admit, but they can keep you out. However, no one here can definitively say that you do or do not have a chance. The only way to know is to apply and gear your application toward your strengths for I/O. And don't cut down others for having less experience - its your fit and potential for a program that will have the greatest impact.

Hey Mike, to be blunt - your 7 years of mental health work experience will not get you very far in I/O. In fact, I would say a 22 year old with a higher GRE score may have a better shot. Don't rely on just your work experience - make sure you emphasize your interest in I/O and why you would be a great fit for the program(s) in your personal statement.

Great Point.  I'm linking my Experience as an employment specialist to my personal statement. Plus it's a career change. While not directly I/O field it has some gumption. IMO.
