nutmeg Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Any thoughts on when we might hear from Berkeley? I know some first-round people heard last week -- do any of you folks know when the adcomm will be making its final decisions? Just by looking at last year's results, this weekend could be it. And yeah, the waiting is absolutely killing me. Enough is enough!

hip2btriangle Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 No idea :/ I've kind of given up hope for getting accepted by them already just hope they don't forget to blind copy one of their waves of rejections this year.
newday123 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 And yeah, the waiting is absolutely killing me. Enough is enough! I hear ya. I haven't heard from any school either. Try to keep yourself busy. That's what I've been doing, and January just flew by for me.
APHI224 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Is anyone else concerned that the UCs are practically shutting down because of the economic crisis? I heard they won't be accepting as many people for obvious reasons and offering far less funding. At this point it would feel like jumping onto a sinking ship, but of course the past reputation makes it hard to pass up.

Berkeley was really high on my list, and I was eying Davis, Santa Barbara and San Diego as well. But I would be moving there with dependents, and our situation is alreay precarious, I didn't need to add that kind of stress. Really sucks though!

At this point it would feel like jumping onto a sinking ship, but of course the past reputation makes it hard to pass up. I'm not applying to any of the UC schools but I had the opportunity to talk to someone from the cultural studies at UC Berkeley. She told me they are admitting less students, but the funding is still the same. A week later a read an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education that said graduate students are very cheap labor, and that's why schools wouldn't survive without them. That's why funding for graduate students is usually one of the last things to go away at some schools.
jacib Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Ditto to the cheap labor... they have to let in SOME students. And rumors and speculation say the Berkeley campus is less affected than the other campuses (in terms of money in general, meaning less cohort reduction and more professor retention)... but yeah I am very very nervous about Berkeley. They spaced them out over a while last year (though I'm sure all of you are obsessive enough to know that), so perhaps its done by advisors... and certain professors know who they'll pick first. Yes but Berkeley was one of the places I had the best fit with, I felt, though that might be biased because it was a top choice along with the other program (Columbia) with which I also felt was the best fit. But I'm glad other people are keeping hopes up, because mine were beginning to flag, and if you're hoping, I'm hoping. I am also not available by phone right now... so maybe they're trynig to call me this second and I don't know! When I start seeing people accepted by email, then I'll be really nervous.
nutmeg Posted February 11, 2010 Author Posted February 11, 2010 After getting my Princeton rej yesterday, I figured I'd email the Berkeley folks to see when they'd be contacting applicants. As it turns out, the admissions committee has yet to make its final decisions, and they will be getting in touch with applicants "within the next week or two." That's significantly later than in past years (at least according to the results page), but it might give those of us still waiting a little more hope as February drags on. Good luck everyone!
Jamie Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Wait, I just saw that someone received an acceptance via email today. Soooo....I guess they have started notifying some people.
nutmeg Posted February 11, 2010 Author Posted February 11, 2010 I give up trying to figure out this whole process. Seriously.
focused Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I never realized that some places spread out their admission decisions so much. I could understand if it were a funding issue and they were waiting for some early admits to decline in order to accept others. But few, if any, are declining this early in the game.
sdief Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 It looks like two people on the main notification page have been accepted via email today...ahhh
