Hi. I applied to painting programs for 2010, so I know it's too late but I am worrying now. My portfolio is abstract landscapes made of plaster/resin/salvaged wood, it is something I evolved from landscape painting and then mixed media work. The work, I guess, could be considered low relief sculpture, assemblage, constructions of some sort, and may not be considered paintings even though I am concerned mostly about what they are 2 dimensionally. do mfa painting programs want people that use actual paint?

I think it depends on the program. I can't tell you for sure as I am applying for the first time this year. My work is also mixed media and I do relief carving into wood. I too was a little worried about this so I applied to a variety of programs.

I'd agree that it depends on the types of programs you've applied to. I think that using materials other than paint is a good thing. I'd like to think that grad schools look at painters who think beyond paint as a material are just what they're looking for. I hope you get some good news soon!
