Apologies if this is a stupid question, but I was curious to know if students are expected to purchase the books listed on an MA/PhD reading list or if there would be copies of some/many of them around a department's office for students to consult. I know that some reading lists are rather long and would imagine that it could cost a pretty penny. Thank you in advance!

Even if they aren't in the department's office (which I doubt they are), most universities have a library (or several!) full of books that are on one's reading list...
