pleasegodletmein Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 anyone out there? i applied to wst progs at emory and wustl. rejected from emory already- they decided who to interview yesterday. damn.
Minnesotan Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 I study women in a purely non-academic fashion. If that's at all helpful.
pleasegodletmein Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 thanks- me too. i was hoping to get funded for it, though.
Minnesotan Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 What, like a sugar momma? Look out cougars, here I come!
pleasegodletmein Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 naw- more like a sugar women's studies dept. cougars?
pleasegodletmein Posted January 18, 2008 Author Posted January 18, 2008 ah, i see. i prefer richer young women though- best of both worlds.
amanda1655 Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 As a woman who is interested in women's studies but not applying to them, my only response to the direction this thread has taken is to roll my eyes. Could we please leave the talk about cougars to Vh1? And, if you are going to insist on talking about dating cougars, please at least watch their hour-long special on Hollywood Cougars. At least then you would know that a young rich woman is called a "kitten."
rising_star Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 I'm pretty sure it was all in good fun, Amanda. No need to worry, I'm certainly not. Then again, I also decided I'm not enough of a feminist to go into a dual women's studies program.
amanda1655 Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I am not worried, hence the eye roll and the Vh1 comment instead of a long rant. However, I do think it is an odd conversation for someone to engage in who is applying to women's studies programs. Maybe I am just too worried about what I say on the forums somehow coming back to haunt me.
Minnesotan Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I sometimes forget that feminism perpetuates humorlessness. Luckily there are always plenty of feminists around to correct me. =) Anyway, it's a good thing I don't have cable. I might just take your advice and watch VH1, which would further distract me (much like these forums) from finishing my MA. **Edit: Either I can't spell, or my C-key is sticking.

But for the women's studies applicants, where all did you apply and what's your focus?
pleasegodletmein Posted January 22, 2008 Author Posted January 22, 2008 i applied at emory (rejected) and wustl in women, gender, and sexuality studies.
tiiiiiredofwaiting Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 I've recently been accepted to WGS Master's Programs @ Loyola Chicago (my #2), Roosevelt & St. John's. Still holding out for WashU my #1....although I simply cannot deal with the waiting any longer!!!! Anyone else have accepts/rejects yet?
indigo_black Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Congrats on the acceptances! I got into Emory's women's studies PhD, and Indiana's Gender Studies PhD. I'm also waitlisted at Ohio State. Haven't heard from the other programs yet, and I'm assuming I'm rejected because they sent out acceptances already, but it's ok because I'm pretty set on Emory. The program is awesome, I really liked all the faculty and current students when I visited, and it's a great fit for what I want to do. Plus I love Atlanta!
tiiiiiredofwaiting Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 congrats on emory !!!!!!!! i am sure you will have an amazing time in the ATL (lol) I GOT ACCEPTED INTO DEPAUL THIS MORNING!!!!! Now I'm stuck between choosing between two amazing programs (DePaul & Loyola) and have no idea what to do! I haven't heard a word about financial aid from either yet so that is going to be a huge factor in the end I'm also looking to plan a trip out there potentially to meet with both programs and see whats what Did you get your undergrad degree in wgs er? i'm coming in from a different discipline & a tad nervous!!!
indigo_black Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Congrats again! You must be so excited. The decision must be tough but at least it's a good kind of decision, right? My undergrad degree was in American Studies and my MA was a research degree in American women's literature, so I'm confident I won't be too far behind students who did WS at undergrad. Err, I hope... My American Studies degree had a big focus on gender studies, feminism and queer theory so that's given me a good grounding, plus I've kept up with my reading in the last 3 years since finishing my MA so hopefully that'll put me in a good position. What discipline are you coming from? Do you think you'll go on to a PhD afterwards?
tiiiiiredofwaiting Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Oh believe you me I am ridiculously excited! I'm leaning strongly towards DePaul already because I already emailed them nonchalantly in regards to my financial aid package (no funding decisions have been made yet @ any of the schools I've been accepted to, BOO!) and they returned my email within 24hours. I emailed Loyola about funding over a week ago and still haven't heard back. If that is how they respond to their students then no thank you! DePaul even said if I wanted to speak to them more specifically in regards to my financial situation that they would gladly talk with me over the phone this week about it, I want to because I really need the money but I'm nervous about talking about money over the phone, any advice? Your academic background sounds interesting I think you'll be fine for your PhD and the reading is something I definitely need to get caught up on, this week I was actually planning on emailing some of the WGS professors at my undergraduate university for suggested reading lists, and books you might suggest? I'll be reading nonstop this summer!! As for my background: i double majored in history & international studies (concentrating in human rights) for my undergraduate degree. i focused most of my research for my thesis on women and have researched the correlation on how violence has increased against women in the middle east post 9/11 and have also looked into the restrictions placed upon women within the catholic church. i'm nervous about getting into WGS but think that within my research and provided that i read a TONNNNNN this summer i should be okay as for afterwards, depending on how well i do i would love to go on to a PhD afterwards, i guess i'll have to wait & see
