  1. Thanks guys! I'm pretty stoked. I actually had to respond the next day to make sure I hadn't dreamed the email! For other applicants maybe next year, our class is 25 total. Seems to be about 15 Madison alumni, 10 out of state, no other WI schools as far as I can tell at first glance, I think 2 from Madison's post-bacc program. Someone next year will be dying to read that is my guess Best wishes to you too fellow Wisconsinite! UWM has an awesome program, enjoy it!
  2. Oh I definitely talked with financial aid before I accepted the spot. Basically all graduate students are eligible for the giant Stafford loan (which is all I got). I'm from Milwaukee and have been living in Madison for awhile so I'm aware of what both cities are like. Basically the decision came down to: Madison: We don't have to move. Husband doesn't have to find a new job (full time jobs with benefits are hard to come by nowadays...). Love the area. Excellent program. Would also save me a summer's worth of tuition. Milwaukee: Change would have been nice. Excellent program. City is great, only a little boring to me since I grew up there. Both will get me a good degree and a job placement. Both cities have excellent externship opportunities. The only disadvantage to Madison is that there is one clinical advisor who I find to be just terrible (ok just really annoying)...but making my decision on that is stupid, as every place has someone who is annoying. However, logistics wise, me and my husband agreed that Madison is the better choice. I just still have to write the email to Dr. Seery today. :'(
  3. Ummmmm so the impossible just happened. I got off the waitlist for Wisconsin-Madison! I couldn't be happier, but I'm already signed up for classes at Milwaukee...met with an advisor, registered, the whole shazam. I'm leaning towards the position at Madison (but only if my stafford loan would transfer over...)...what do I do about Milwaukee? The people there were so nice and I really like it there, but I really like Madison too and it would mean not having to move (or at least only within Madison itself). Help? :'(
  4. UW Milwaukee (unless UW Madison takes me off the waitlist, which I doubt)
  5. I got an email from Western Michigan putting me on the waitlist on Monday. Will be taking myself off.
  6. You sound like such a positive person who will make a great SLP someday. You too had lots of reasons to start bashing the process, but yet the whole time, you congratulated everyone else and stayed positive the whole time, despite the stress you were going through. I wish more people in the world were like that
  7. I toured the facilities last week and loved it! I will also be attending, the only way I won't is if Madison takes me, only because I'd save myself a move, and my husband wouldn't have to transfer, basically logistics. I think I'll be happy at UWM, even if I'm petrified of moving to Milwaukee I've got a couple of apartments that I contacted, but they only have a 60 day notification, so they won't know if anything will be availabe til later. Seems to be typical in Milwaukee; in Madison it's not. I had to give notice a month ago, and my lease is up in July
  8. Goodnight Hall is on the far west end if campus, and other than the dorms there aren't any places in that close of a walking distance. The campus bus line stops there. The near west side would be the best, near Engineering or Camp Randall would be the closest, otherwise the city busses from the west side all go through campus. In fact, with the way Madison is set up, busses from the east, west, north, and south sides all have multiple stops on campus. I live on the far south side and take the bus to campus every day, it's a 25 minute ride, and students are provided with free bus passes. The west side is definitely the nicest area to live in as well, followed by the east side, then the north and south sides. Popular rental companies are MPM, JSM, Steve Brown, JEK, and some smaller ones you can google. The further you are from campus, the cheaper the apartments. Having a car is nice for groceries, but driving to campus is not a good plan. Meters are $1.50 an hour, if you get a spot. Madison transit is reliable and ok to use to get to and from campus. Biking is also great in Madison, though a bit cold in winter (not that that stops anyone!) If you want more specifics let me know! If I get off the waitlist I'll definitely be attending Madison! Otherwise it's off to Milwaukee
  9. Lexical_gap, I accepted at UWM. I only otherwise got into Marquette and Michigan State, and simply can't pass up instate tuition (darn money!). I guess my only question for you is if you truly like the program, as I see someone on the results board didn't. How is the faculty? How is living in Milwaukee? I'm technically from the greater Milwaukee area, but know nothing about the city. I'm looking at an apartment tomorrow, know of any areas that are good, or any to avoid?
  10. I know plenty about UW Madison! Goodnight Hall is located on the far west end of campus, and the Waisman center even further west (so try to live on the West side, it's much nicer anyhow). It's right on the lake, and you can't tell in winter, but it's on lakeshore path, a bike/pedestrian trail running from Memorial Union all the way out to picnic point and further west. The building is small, and shared with another department (something with water and science). It's got a clinic in it, a lecture hall, and the offices of the faculty. I only know a few of the faculty since I'm a post-bacc (and was stuck with a few lecturers since one professor was on sabbatical), but the ones I've had so far were all very nice, helpful, and great teachers. The Waisman center is home to the phonology clinic and other child development clinics, but I've never been there. The campus is located in the heart of the city, and fairly spread out. It's beautiful, old, and they're in the process of improving it (the horrible Humanities building is being replaced, and Van Hise (the languages building) at well at some point). It's got lots of green space, great for running, biking, etc. Most bus lines stop on or near campus, so commuting from places further west, east, north, or south is easy. Having a car is handy, but don't think about using it to commute to campus. The only think I've ever heard one student say is that it can be hard to get placements since there's only so many places in Madison that you can do one in, but I imagine if you have access to a car and can go slightly further that that would help. It was my first choice, but I'm waitlisted
  11. While I seem to be a very lonely Wisconsinite posting on here, I'm sure there are and will be others with questions about the various programs, housing in each city, living, etc, so here's a place to ask!
  12. Me either! I'm so glad I have so many instate choices (well, most waitlisted me, but still!) I tried to pay a bit of attention to rankings but also to cost since I'm not sure I'll go for a PhD. I mean UW Milwaukee is still in the top 100, and if i go for jobs in the midwest, people have heard of Milwaukee, plus there are plenty of places for neat externships in the city. I'd rather have Marquette on my resume, but can't justify paying double to go to school down the street. Sometimes I really hate how so much of this comes down to money.
  13. Waitlisted at Whitewater. But in at UWM! Just have to take statistics Anyone hear about monies to there? Will most likely be accepting!
  14. I'm still waiting on a few as well. I think that I was waitlisted at Eau Claire just because their program is so tiny. I was expecting straight rejections from Madison and Iowa as they were my reach schools, so while I'm cool with the waitlist, I'm not counting on getting off of it. If Madison let me know before other plans are final I'd accept, but like I say, not going to happen. If I don't get into Whitewater I will never live it down with my family...my mom went there (and was dead set on me going there for undergrad, actually discouraged me from going to Madison), my brother goes there, and his girlfriend is a com dis major (undergrad) there. Getting into UWM would just make things so much easier and relaxed! And today, please! Pretty pretty please?
