CSU Applications

I have a question about the CSU mentor application. I'm applying to a few CSUs and on the applications I've looked at, there's a section that asks for three academic references. I am planning to use two professional references and one academic reference, since the departments do not require three academic references. Does anyone know if we have to fill out this section or can we write something along the lines of "sent directly to the department"? I know that's usually the case for the statement of purpose.

I'm also applying to CSUs, I just wrote in the names of my professional references and the organization they work for. Your reccommenders wont recieve anything if you put their names in.
