From what I understand, it's typically ~$700 for a single room in a home with a few housemates, in a reasonable part of town. Of course, it varies. I've been told to avoid the boardwalk area and stick to the west side if I go.
Hey! I may also someday be a banana slug. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the grad dorms on campus, though.
When I went for an interview, most of the students suggested finding a place on the "west side" if possible. The city definitely seems like a cool place, though. If only more SC grad students were on this forum!
Maybe so, maybe not! Quite a few of the graduate student TAs I had were older, and I always got the vibe that many of the professors preferred students with what they called "life experience". When I was finishing applications, my advising prof asked if I was sure I was ready - she usually doesn't accept students who have been out of college less than a few years. So there is hope!!
Schmitt and Holbrook do a lot of teaching and work in the tropics (so jealous of their research intern people), so maybe that's why they didn't get back to you?
For my field at least, I've heard that it's really important to get a response before applying and to build a rapport. I'm not sure if it's the same for marine, but I imagine it's similar. :/
I'm EEB - plant community ecology! Though I'm also hoping to study biodiversity across tropic levels (bugs). I applied to just three programs (see my signature).
I've heard back from UCSC (already went for an interview - it's the most amazing campus!!!) and UCSD (interviewing next month). Waiting for Stanford with only the tiniest sliver of hope.
Astond, who are you applying with at ucsb? My undergrad degree is aquatic bio from there.
So I just called my department specifically (biology), and they said "they're in the process of sending things out within the next week or so"... perhaps there is hope. did you call the main office, or your program specifically?
Does anyone know which of the home departments at Stanford sent out interviews for sure (chem/systems, immuno, bioinformatics, maybe cancer...)?
Their website says invites might go out until late January (but that they started this week), and that interviews are Feb 26 to Mar 2 - can anyone confirm those dates?
I apologize if this has already been cleared up.
