I went there for undergrad, such a great atmosphere, laid back, awesome people!

  2. Thanks! I'm sure everything will work out after all. And I'm sorry to hear about your rejection as well - but congrats on the fellowship offer!!
  3. Official rejection from Stanford Biosciences (Biology) came in the mail today - fancy paper and all. GL to everyone else!
  4. From what I understand, it's typically ~$700 for a single room in a home with a few housemates, in a reasonable part of town. Of course, it varies. I've been told to avoid the boardwalk area and stick to the west side if I go.
  5. Hey! I may also someday be a banana slug. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the grad dorms on campus, though. When I went for an interview, most of the students suggested finding a place on the "west side" if possible. The city definitely seems like a cool place, though. If only more SC grad students were on this forum!
  6. Maybe so, maybe not! Quite a few of the graduate student TAs I had were older, and I always got the vibe that many of the professors preferred students with what they called "life experience". When I was finishing applications, my advising prof asked if I was sure I was ready - she usually doesn't accept students who have been out of college less than a few years. So there is hope!!
  7. Schmitt and Holbrook do a lot of teaching and work in the tropics (so jealous of their research intern people), so maybe that's why they didn't get back to you? For my field at least, I've heard that it's really important to get a response before applying and to build a rapport. I'm not sure if it's the same for marine, but I imagine it's similar. :/
  8. I'm EEB - plant community ecology! Though I'm also hoping to study biodiversity across tropic levels (bugs). I applied to just three programs (see my signature). I've heard back from UCSC (already went for an interview - it's the most amazing campus!!!) and UCSD (interviewing next month). Waiting for Stanford with only the tiniest sliver of hope. Astond, who are you applying with at ucsb? My undergrad degree is aquatic bio from there.
  9. I will need a lot of cake to make it through to April.

  10. We'll just have to wait, but I think it might be time for me to consider what life without Stanford might be like.
  11. So I just called my department specifically (biology), and they said "they're in the process of sending things out within the next week or so"... perhaps there is hope. did you call the main office, or your program specifically?
  12. I'm glad to hear that as well... though I hope I can make it through the weekend without too much stress!
  13. Does anyone know which of the home departments at Stanford sent out interviews for sure (chem/systems, immuno, bioinformatics, maybe cancer...)? Their website says invites might go out until late January (but that they started this week), and that interviews are Feb 26 to Mar 2 - can anyone confirm those dates? I apologize if this has already been cleared up.
  14. Waiting, waiting, anticipating... Stanford, send out interview invites already! P:

  15. All the NSF GRFP stuff is in... time to edit application essays. Blech.

  16. I'd change it a little. I also knew my letter writer fairly well, and was a little less formal: It basically went "Dear So-and-so, As you know, the NSF GRFP deadline for reference letters has been pushed back to today at 5pm (my time zone). Please let me know if you need anything else before submitting the letter today, or if the official NSF email didn't not make it to you. Thanks!"
  17. I would send a gentle email reminder - especially if you are in a different time zone than the "8pm" deadline. One of my letter writers only just submitted their letter, too... After a gentle reminder. Good luck!
  18. Quick question! For the citations/references - does it matter what style we use? Is it okay to have a super condensed version, as follows?: Last, F. Journal Name. (Year). Or do we need to include the volume number and page numbers? I've found different answers in different places.
  19. I took a few practice tests through Magoosh and Powerprep, and studied with the Magoosh quant lessons. Powerprep 1: 154Q/161V (315) - before I did any studying Magoosh 1: 158Q/154V (312) Magoosh 2: 157Q/160V (317) Magoosh 3: 159Q/162V (321) Powerprep 2: 162Q/163V (325) Magoosh score predictor: Q: 158-163, V: 157-162 Real GRE: 161Q/166V (327) Overall, I think Magoosh did a great job of preparing me - their lessons are great for someone who hasn't done high school math in a while... I do wish I had scored a wee bit higher in quant, though.
