  1. Don't worry about your program being unfunded... I gave up 18k in TA and other types of funding last year at my alma mater because I wanted to attend my dream school and live in a different city... I was offered very minimal funding, like 2k since that is how much they offer all new grad students. I managed to get an MA SSHRC for next year and I have applied to a few other scholarships that I am waiting to hear back on. You will have other opportunities for funding. Money comes and goes and provinicial student loans exist for a reason. You only live once, go for the school you where you will find what you are looking for.
  2. Many Americans come to McGill because of its brand recognition and because it is cheaper for them to pay international student fees than in state or out of state fees in the US... McGill is #1 in Canada and very well known in the world. I think this would be your safest bet.
  3. I received an email this morning to go check the status of my application in the portal, same as the one on April 1. I was offered the award! Very happy right now, didn't think they would inform alternates this soon. Good luck to everyone on the alternate list, I think chances are really good since the new system allowed for multiple award winners and the universities were aware of that. And trajectory7, I think this particular allocation system is only at UBC. Not sure if other universities give out awards based on specific disciplines like this but based on the logic, I think that you would be 1/3. Best of luck!!!
  4. https://www.grad.ubc.ca/sites/default/files/materials/awards_masters_quotas.pdf This has some useful information towards the end.. Im not sure if all universities follow the same quota system as UBC though, which is somewhat confusing
  5. Does anyone know the chances or likelyhood for alternates? It seems like there were quite a lot of us this year in the thread... Congrats to everyone who received an award AND who managed to get on the alternate list... There is still hope!
  6. I am waiting for an MA SSHRC as well... It seems its dependent on the school to manually send in their results... Looks like you are an alternate for the University of Newfoundland and the others havent been updated yet... ***I was just put on alternate as well.... anyone know what this means exactly??
  7. I graduated in 2009 and I didn't apply to grad school until last year for the 2013/2014 academic year. However, I maintained my relationships with my professors during this time. I was able to get two very solid references from them and the time that had elapsed didn't matter. Send them an email every year or every couple of months depending on the level of your relationship. Schedule meeting times with them during the summer, or whenever it is convenient for both of you. Update them on what you are doing in your academic or professional life. You just have to maintain the relationship and when the time comes for you to apply they will not have forgotten about you!
  8. Hi guys, Does anyone know of any good resources for the SSHRC application process? Proposal tips etc.? The application season is starting soon!
  9. Its for an MA. Both my profs from York, who wrote my letters of recommendation, said go to McGill. Money comes and goes. And there are plenty of opportunities in my field to recoup the debt once I finish the program. As for my future goals, I really believe a specialized MA from McGill will do me better than a general MEd from York. I also don't know where you heard their reputation was declining? Still #18 in the world as of 2012.
  10. The same thing happened to me... I applied to two funded MA programs at OISE and was not accepted, but they offered the unfunded MEd instead, which I did not apply for. They only admit 3-4 students per year for the funded MAs... The MEd is just less research based. It means that they liked your application and would still like you to attend albeit in a different program.
  11. I am in a similar predicament. I received very minimal funding from McGill, my first choice, but was offered full funding and a stipend from York, my alma mater. McGill is a better fit overall for my reserach interests, a more specialized program nad has prestige attached to it. York is more general and already did my undergrad there. I emailed McGill with details of York's offer and they were unable to offer anything more. It was worth a shot though. University of Toronto seems less likely to do it, but it can't hurt to try.
  12. Hi focaultmania, I am originally from Toronto and did my undergraduate degree at York. York is actually on the outskirts of the city but they are building a subway that will serve the campus, which I think will be completed by 2015. You can find cheap housing near the campus and while Toronto is generally a safe city, York is located in an area that is known for crime. If you would rather live downtown or in a different area, cost of living can be high. It depends on your standards. The commute might also be long (45 minutes or longer). Hamilton is a university town and McMaster is well known. Cost of living is significantly cheaper but overall Hamilon is not a very nice city. Toronto has more to offer. This all depends on your interests, both academically and personally. It seems that York is your dream program, you applied last year and you really wanted to go. Now the opportunity has presented itself!
  13. Hey Ms. Potts. Congratulations on your admittance first of all! Thank you for the info, OISE was always a long shot, they told me what the odds are. I checked last year and 50 people applied, only 3-4 were let into the program I chose. I have been accepted to McGill already but it would be nice to have this option as well since the funding is so good.
