  1. You should tell me about your work, I would love to know more about it. My top pick hands down is Columbia University, though I'll be applying to a few places in NYC. I have a good shot at SVA because I was wait-listed there last year. Any feedback from you on my own work would be most appreciated! http://caitlinmccollom.com
  2. Your work is pretty interesting, do you have an artist statement?
  3. Just got back from a visit to NYC and I checked out CUNY Queens College. They have a small program with 15 students, a beautiful campus, and huge private studios. Personal downsides: focus on Social Practice program ( public-ish art and art activism as far as I could tell) and poor student work with no focus on theory or history. Also I heard from the students that the academic component (art history and theory classes) is very poor. Good luck!
  4. The red ink blot figures are about 9.5 inches long. Maybe I will spend a little extra time in the library before I submit my portfolio anywhere. I was especially interested in Robert Irwin and Bill viola's water pieces for the series. Thank you again for your criticism!
  5. Thank you SO much for the honesty. I went to a public university in rural Texas where what I was doing (2nd wavey performance) was totally unique. So, my college work was probably not accurately evaluated. I graduated in Dec. 2010. The Lustration was a clear trajectory in a new direction for me. So the work I will be applying with this year will be all work from The Lustration. Any further critique is most welcome.
  6. I think michaelwebster is right. The art world is a strange a ferocious one, if you have zero experience you will be eaten up. Take a few classes at a community college to at least get the terminology down and some critique experience. Talk to everyone you can who is a formally trained artist. Get real criticism on your work. You have to at least get your feet wet. Let me tell you, applying to grad school, and "making it" in the art world is arduous and emotionally-taxing even for someone who has gotten the proper training. Or if you really really want to go to grad school (as opposed to going on residency, or taking some time to focus on your work in general) you should apply to a new program that is looking for artists to get them started, or look to a program that is not prestigious but simply will give you studio space and instructors.
  7. Mistake I made: underestimating the amount of time you will need to put into your applications. You need to put in a lot of time, take the time you think you'll need and quadruple it!
  8. Thanks everyone! This post inspired me to change some things around so apologies for the website construction of you run into it.
  9. Here's my work, I just completed the series: The Lustration check it out http://caitlinmccollom.com
  10. Thank you for your suggestions, michaelwebster!
  11. Hello-- I am new to the grad cafe but I have applied for an MFA once before. Well, I am reapplying because I was not totally satisfied with my results so I'm going for it one more time. I am visiting New York City in a few weeks and I am going to looking at schools and trying to put a face to my name, hopefully for a better shot this year. What is the most successful way to conduct a visit? What are the best things to ask? How can I get professors and students to really want me in the program just from a visit? I should mention I have been asking around and in NYC prospective students are NOT allowed to sit in during critiques or lectures because that is considered giving away a free service apparently. So that's one hurdle. Here is where I am applying to and hoping to visit during my trip: The School of Visual Arts New York University Columbia Queens College Hunter College Any tips, advice or helpfulness in general is immensely appreciated!
