  1. I don't know if you're waitlisted or not? But I attended the Visitation Day and met two accepted students who were probably going to accept offers at other universities. That could possibly help you? I don't know anything else though, sorry
  2. Sell your first born...or apply for the Marshall or Rhodes Scholarships if you want to study in the UK.
  3. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who feels this way. I do have to admit though that the school that I got accepted to is basically an ideal fit for me. I guess that I should be thankful that I don't have to make any difficult decisions. I also have to constantly remind myself that everything happens for a reason.
  4. Sigh...denied from CUNY. I think for the most part my final decision is made. I've been accepted to one PhD program, which is great (please don't get me wrong)! But sometimes I worry it's a mistake, especially since I've been denied from every other school that I applied to....
  5. i just called the history department, and they said that the professors are meeting this friday to discuss final decisions and financial aid packages. apparently, we should be hearing back within the next 10 days!
  6. awesome! thanks for the heads up!
  7. does anyone know when students usually have to respond back to offers? is it typically april 15, or does it depend on the university/program? i'm asking for my UVA waitlisted, lurker friend...not me, I swear hahah (i was denied from there weeks ago haha)
  8. I'm still waiting for University of Iowa, CUNY, University of Toronto and UVM (which is a MA program). Let's just get this over with already!
  9. my good friend also just got waitlisted at UVA! now comes the awkward/painful time for those poor souls stuck in acceptance limbo. is it too early to hope that people start making final decisions soon for the sake of waitlisters?
  10. I was admitted to OSU back in late January with a fellowship. The Visitation Day for accepted students is March 22. I would assume that you have to be hearing back soon, one way or another. Sorry if that's not any help to you. :/
  11. if anyone is still waiting to hear from wisconsin-madison, you should check the online portal. it appears that they made their decisions.
  12. I was accepted to OSU and heard from a POI via email in late January. Then I recieved an official acceptance letter (with some vague information about funding and a fellowship) in early Feburary. Visitiation Day for accepted students is March 22, so I'm not sure what that means in terms of people who haven't heard anything back yet?
  13. i haven't heard back from any other schools besides osu. it's kind of freaking me out. working in a cubicle and sitting in front of a computer all day does not help my sanity because i'm able to constantly check my email.
  14. congrats! who emailed you/what did it say?
  15. Thank you! I checked the status of my application online, and then a few hours later, I got an email confirming my acceptance and nomination of a fellowship.
  16. I didn't post on the acceptance page, but I was accepted to OSU today! I'm damn excited to say the least.
  17. I just got an email from Wisconsin Madison and I just about had a heart attack. Turns out, it was just reminding me to apply for financial aid through the FAFSA. ughughughhhhh.....
  18. For those of you applying to schools in the UK, how are you planning on paying for it? I deferred from UCL last year because I didn't want to take out $30,000 or so in loans. Getting my MA in European History at UCL may be my plan B if I don't get into any PhD programs in the states.
  19. I submitted 7 of my applications and only have 2 left (Graduate Center CUNY and WashU) which are due mid-January (so I'm taking a temporary mental health break from this whole process). I feel so relived to have submitted them because now it's out of my hands and up to the PhD fates. Even my professor mentioned to me how much calmer I am now. It honestly feels so good not to constantly be a ball of stress and anxiety. I'm able to actually do things that I want to do now like read for fun, watch a ton of netflix, and hang out with friends. I'm trying so hard not to worry about the outcome of this application season because what happens happens and I will be ready to apply for the next 56489735 upcoming years until SOMEONE wants to accept me ANYWHERE haha
  20. Thanks you guys! I appreciate your help and honesty. I knew I messed up pretty bad. My greatest fear is that they'll just trash my applications right away because of my low scores. My situation also has another layer of complexity. I deferred admissions to University College London's European History MA program last year. I'm thinking that UCL will be my plan b if I don't get into any programs here in the US. Are masters programs usually worth taking out loans for? I was lucky enough to graduate from undergrad without any debt, and I feel like maybe a yearlong masters at UCL would be more beneficial for me in the long run (considering my GRE scores). Then afterwards, I would apply again to PhD programs. Ahhh this whole thing is literally driving me insane!!
  21. Hello everybody! I'm a longtime lurker of this forum, and I thought I would finally introduce myself (and present a question). I just graduated this past spring, and I'm hoping to enter history PhD program for next fall. Broadly, I want to study modern European history with minor fields in Holocaust and gender and women's history. I'm interested in the social and cultural history of 20th century Germany with a specific focus on women, children, and families. So I just took the GREs yesterday for the second time, and I did terrible, like literally awful (Verbal: 148 and Quantitative: 149). I know it's a lame excuse, but I get all flustered taking standardized tests because I over-think the questions and debate the various answers in my mind. I also didn't study as hard as I should have...I know, shame on me... Other than my poor GRE scores (which I don't have time to retake for this application season) my applications should be competitive. I'll have a strong statement of purpose along with solid LORs, undergraduate GPA (3.83 overall and 3.89 in history major), and honors thesis writing sample on a original topic (that has little research out there in the field). I have a lot of background in independent research as a undergrad research assistant, and I'm currently the grad program assistant for my undergrad university's new Holocaust and Genocide Studies Center. I also completed an internship at a museum down in DC this past summer which allowed me to go to National Archives in College Park and Library of Congress. As for languages, I currently have basic reading ability of German and am working towards developing language skills in both German and French. Despite all this, I really worry that my GRE scores will hold back the rest of my application. Should I still bother to apply? Do you think I should address my poor scores in my statement of purpose? My professors tell me not to worry about them because "grad committees don't really look at them." I'm not sure if I believe that...so how much weight do GRE scores actually hold in the application process? I would appreciate any advice or words of wisdom from you guys! Thanks!
