Thank you, lpeppersauce! I'm glad to hear about the farmer's market. I lived in Philly for 4 years and since I moved back home to Texas I have really missed real farmer's markets! I've been having a lot of trouble finding rentals that fit my (admittedly picky) criteria. How is the rental market near campus - am I just looking way too soon? When should I start realistically trying to find a place?

I hadn't heard anything so I got annoyed and emailed them last Friday - rejected. Unsurprising, considering they said they would notify everyone by Jan. 30 but I was irritated nonetheless.

UT Austin has had a Masters program for a while but they just (literally within the last 3 months) got approval to restart their PhD program. I've had meetings with a few of their faculty (I work for the university administration) and they definitely seem like a very applied shop. Ultimately I opted not to apply there since their PhD program was going to be brand new. That being said, I got my undergrad degree there at UT Austin is an amazing school and Austin is an amazing city, so you can't go too terribly wrong.

Congratulations, nugget3! I wish I could help you out but I'm looking for places close to NC State as well. In my (limited) research, it seems like places near campus run $500-600 for a one-bedroom but I've seen places looking for roommates to share a place for around $450/room. I can't even seem to find an apartment locator that is reasonable to work with. We'll be moving from out of state and it's so hard to even look at places online without any reference. I've called three leasing companies so far and two of them have been exceedingly rude and the other didn't even respond! If anyone has any suggestions as to a locator or relocation specialist, I would be greatly obliged.

I cannot possibly explain how much this thread title resonates with me right now. I just don't understand some of these departments. JUST MAKE UP YOUR MIND! One department said very specifically that they would notify everyone by Jan. 30 and asked applicants not to email or call the department to inquire about their status. It's 2 weeks past Jan. 30 and I still haven't heard a peep. Likely, that means a rejection but at this point I don't even care, just TELL me. It makes me want to rip my hair out!

Oh that is quite the drive, you're right. I don't particularly miss Houston, but it's home! The heat and humidity are something one never fully gets used to, I assure you. Does anyone have any thoughts on commuting into campus at NC State? How is traffic in Raleigh?

I feel entirely the same way. I haven't heard a peep from Carnegie Mellon, and it clearly looks like they're done delivering any positive news. I'd like to just know once and for all so that I can move on.

Thank you all and congratulations yourselves! I have definitely seen a lot of recommendations for the Carrboro area, but I think that's probably a little far out for us. I've been looking in the Boylan Heights area, though I hear that in terms of safety it's a bit hit or miss. We'll have a car, but I'd rather not have to use it on a daily basis, if possible. 33andathirdRPM, I suspect we will run into each other! Congratulations! My family is in the Northwest part of town in Cy-Fair and my in-laws are in Sugar Land.

I've been accepted to NC State for a PhD in Statistics and am wondering what neighborhoods we should be investigating. My husband and I are looking to move in the summer and have previously lived in Houston, downtown Philadelphia, and downtown Austin. Walkability, access to running trails and outdoor spaces, a little more of an "urban" feel, and ease of access to campus are our priorities. Also, we don't want to live in an apartment or condo in a complex. The best option for us would be to rent a house or a detached townhome / duplex. Our budget is pretty flexible, we'll have a monthly take-home total of ~$4300 between his salary and my stipend. Any suggestions? We're going for a campus visit weekend at the end of February and would love to walk or drive around some neighborhoods to get a feel for them. Could anyone suggest an apartment locator to work with?
