  1. Hi, Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm in a similar predicament as well. I also got an offer from arguably the top biostats PhD program but have another offer from a second tier stats PhD programs that is strong for interdisciplinary work. I'm generally interested in biological applications, so in that sense both would be a good fit, but I would maybe like to explore other areas as well. The recent academic placements are arguably better at the stats school, but it is hard to say whether this trend would continue. However, the biostats program seems to have stronger private sector placement. I am having a tough time deciding, so I would greatly appreciate hearing everyone's thoughts.
  2. I will have to disagree with OhioStateStudent here and say that if you are sure that you are into Bayesian, then Duke is the place to go. They have some very established people working in a wide range of areas and judging from my visit there, they also support their students well. However, if you are not sure that you want to do Bayesian statistics, Duke may not be the best choice. In this case, it may be better to go somewhere where you can decide for yourself whether you lean more Bayesian or frequentist instead of being converted from the onset. Private sector placements look good, but I'm not sure about the academic placements.
  3. I don't know about Yale, but I hear that Applied Masters students at UMich have no problems being supported at least partially by TA appointments (something you may or may not have considered regarding the cost). Their stat 250 class has over 1700 undergrads (!) enrolled, so they really need TA's and pay fairly well for them.
