nah, it just makes me a lazy typist this morning. TSAR = The Sun Also Rises FWTBT = For Whom the Bell Tolls The Sun Also Rises is on my desert island top 5 list, while For Whom the Bell Tolls i absolutely could not stand the first time i read it. glad i read it again though, cos i got a lot more out of it this time around. still... nowhere near my desert island top 5. i'll also second the henry james comment made earlier. i've got a love-hate relationship with that man. love his glorious syntax & beautiful sentence structure... absolutely hate his plots & writing overall. not for me.

i'm nearly the exact opposite. i could read/re-read/talk about TSAR until the cows come home & never ever tire of it. FWTBT, on the other hand... not so much. 14-year-old me read it & hated it, & i've avoided it ever since, until now since it's assigned for one of my seminars next semester. just finished reading it again for the first time, & contemporary me appears to have warmed to it.

it was directed at you as well as/possibly gauche (i wasn't clear based on the original post if gauche is attending strictly as an attendee or presenting as well). i can understand your desire to retain some anonymity. sounds interesting though, good luck! -

seconded. virtually all of my MA seminars have had one or two short papers which are intended (though not necessarily required) to work as seed papers for your seminar paper. -

i took two senior seminars in undergrad, both of which culminated in a 15-20 page paper. one of them had two shorter papers along the lines of 7-10 pages prior to the seminar paper, while the other seminar had no other graded assignments at all. if you're the lone dissenter, i'd recommend asking your professor if you can treat the three papers as part of a whole: i.e. your first two 7-page papers, although capable of standing alone, will work as seed papers for your final paper, which will be 21 pages or so. that way, you get to write the long paper you want to write, but you don't take away from other students' ability to do 3 separate 7 pagers, & everyone still does the same amount of work roughly. -
So, what's the deal with "Recruitment Weekends"?
lisajay replied to radiomars's topic in Waiting it Out
my guess would be that it depends on the program, but i do know that for some humanities programs, interviews are typically done over the phone (or via email or skype) rather than in person so as not to incur costs associated with in person interviews. -
to add to what proflorax & dark matter have noted, my MA program gives students the option of writing a thesis or taking comprehensive exams. while trying to determine which was the better route, my pseudo/adopted advisor told me that it's really six of one, half-dozen of the other: thesis demonstrates that you have the capacity to handle writing a dissertation, comps show that you're prepared to deal with quals. neither option seems at all likely to get you in or keep you out.

yessir. there's a paper that goes with it, but that's not nearly as fun. the music used is: "mea culpa" // brian eno & david byrne "paris is burning" // st. vincent "most of the time" // bob dylan (post-broken neck, which is the best dylan)
