  1. 1 year masters programs: Ecole polytechnique in france (Masters II) , which is the second year of the masters program, I think you qualify for it since you have a masters in physics, also there is a good scholarship there called the Hadamard something, u will find it when u look, I think since u r based in canada u might know french as well but i dont think this will be a problem There is also phase I at Berlin mathematical school which is a strong program as well, it takes 1.5 years though. Also, many english schools have similar 1 year systems to cambridge like Edinburgh (which is Scottish but still), also Warwick i think. Virginia Tech has some 1 year masters program for international students though I dont know much details As for the study environment: i think that's up to u for the most part, Tim Gowers (famous mathematician working in Cambridge) says that understanding the material is always better and easier than just memorizing stuff for the test, u can always find colleagues to form study groups and work through Cambridge together, also I hear Cambridge part III is not that competitive since they take many students (100 ?) , I think the problem is mainly with funding
  2. Hi CW, I am curious as to what distinguishes his profile for acceptance at all the top places?. I am not sure if his school is reputed or if his letter writers are known, otherwise his profile seems pretty similar to the profiles of most international students I have seen so far (excellent grades, good coursework, little to no relevant research experience, strong LORs from unknown writers, excellent general and good subject GRE). I know from past years' admission results that such is not enough for getting into top schools in (pure) math, it seems pretty different in stats.
  3. Thanks a lot! do u think the bar for getting into programs like NYU and Duke (undergrad reputation, not so good GRE) is lower for mathematical bio or is it just as hard as the case with pure and applied math ?

  5. Hello, I'd like to get your opinion about my chances for admission in mathematical bio programs given my background Undergrad School 1: BSc in Math and CS (3.9 overall, 3.95 math, 3.91 CS) graduated last year Undergrad School 2: Medicine degree (grade at graduation equivalent to B+), will graduate January My undergrad schools are not reputed GRE Q: 167 GRE Math: no score yet, I guess around the 80th percentile Coursework in math: Calc I-IV, Real analysis I,II, complex analysis, topology, linear algebra, abstract algebra, galois theory, number theory, Algebraic Geometry, formal logic, theory of computing, numerical analysis + grad course in CS (fuzzy logic and swarm intelligence) Stat coursework: Probability and Statistics and Stochastic processes Research experience: small project in computational bio, 2.5 years of research in computer vision (lots of Stat and machine learning - thesis + research internship - paper in submission) , also starting february i will have 2 research internships in mathematical neuroscience and computational biology in reputed groups I found out that berkeley math has a research group in Algebraic statistics in computational biology (Algebraic geometry + stats + computational bio), also oxford math has a really strong mathematical bio concentration do you think i have chances with these programs ? I have 3 strong recommendations from math professors , do you think i should get one from my research advisor ? thanks
  6. Hello, I wonder how much can the reputation of the undergrad institution hurt an application to a top program in pure math phd. I hear GPA, recommendations, number of advanced courses taken and grades in such advanced courses, all are very important for evaluation, however all these are strictly dependent upon the quality of the undergrad institution. Does good math gre remedy such problem if any. thanks
  7. well for CS + Stat, obviously machine learning and its applications are the first to come to mind like computer vision, computational biology, natural language processing and so on. However, the choice of a program will depend on whether you favor CS or stat more, so a program belonging to CS will probably focus more on the "computational aspects" of machine learning rather than statistical foundations and will be more heuristic with an engineering flavor. In Stat departments, research is more rigorous with more math flavor. in addition to machine learning, there is an interesting area called computational mathematics, not related to statistics but might interest you. good programs in CS with research in machine learning include: CMU, purdue, Berkeley
  8. Hi all, I was wondering if you can advise me on the estimated ranking region for US pure math programs where i might have the best chances (eg top X, mid Y, ... etc). i am international student. I have an undergrad degree in math and in computer science from an unreputed school (top national) (3.95/4.0 math gpa, 3.91/4.0 CS gpa), I graduated last year. i have 3 really strong recommendation letters from 3 american professors. my gre quant. is 96th% (still haven't taken the math gre). As for upper level courses, I have taken algebraic geometry, 2 real analysis, complex analysis, formal logic, topology, number theory, abstract algebra, Galois theory (all A's). i have ~2 yrs of research experience in CS but no publications. i am also in my final year of medicine school in another top national school which i studied concurrently with my math and CS program. I would like to know your opinion regarding my chances given my low reputation school, how high should i be aiming (according to us news ranking for example) and how high should my safety schools be? how much would math gre affect such target given i am not domestic? thanks a lot for your help
