Definitely agree with Nardoned.. the "West End" of Hartford on the West Hartford/ Hartford line is not the best area. I was apartment hunting with my boyfriend in the Manchester area.. it too is about 15-20 minutes from West Hartford's campus. You can find rent anywhere from $800-1200/month for 1-2 bedrooms plus utilities. Tons of old factories that were renovated into apartments (which I personally love because they have exposed bricks, huge windows, and open layouts) and more traditional apartments in the area. West Hartford gets pricey, I wasn't able to find anything under $1100/month, but it's totally worth it if you can afford it. It's a great little center with shopping, bars, food, ect.

I agree with the rolling admissions statement, as my application was complete in September and I didn't find out until March.. Sooo frustrating. It seems you shouldn't rush to try and get things early if you aren't be notified early as well. I had to waste a $200 deposit to NYU just in case, because UConn took so long to let me know I was accepted. And I had to nearly stalk the admissions office with email and follow up calls to get an answer.
With that said, I have heard very good things about the professors, and the field placement office already informed me of field placement opportunities, which I will be interviewing for this week. So after the application process, it seems to get better! I know the dean was new this year and just asked to stay on (friends of mine didn't hear admissions decisions until June/July last year!). Also they are in the middle of reviewing multiple pitches for moving the campus from Greater Hartford (West Hartford) to an urban campus in Hartford, so it's also a transitioning year for the SSW.

Mine never changed from the green "submitted" with a check mark and I was admitted March 3 via email, with an official letter a few days later.

I was an AmeriCorps member in New Haven public schools last year and met multiple MSW students from both SCSU and UConn in their field placements. I have heard great things about both programs, particularly in casework/clinical tracks.
From what I've read and heard, SCSU has a more selective program due to their size and funding. However, UConn MSW students seem to have a more personal/mentor relationship with their professors and field advisors. My aunt manages one of the Department of Social Services in Stamford, CT, and has said she finds more positive feedback from UConn MSW students. This is simply because they have more contact and availability from their professors than those from SCSU (and even Columbia and NYC that come into CT for their placements) and feel they are not as "on their own". That is important to me, as I feel an advisor should also be a mentor.
Also, I feel there are ample opportunities for field placements at both schools. Although my work in New Haven was definitely "clinical" focused in the schools, I know there are literally hundreds of non-profits and other human services organizations in New Haven. (I literally had to create a directory of them all for United Way last summer.) For me, I simply did not want to live in New Haven for another 2 years, and because UConn's Graduate School of Social Work is housed in the greater Hartford campus (and possibly moving into Hartford soon), it is a better location for my personal needs.

I was definitely grappling with this decision as well, as I got into my own state school (UConn), and NYU, Fordham, and Hunter in the city. I am in a somewhat unique situation where no matter where I go, I will not need to take out loans.
The things I personally took into account:
- Prestige: Obviously the bigger named schools (NYU, Fordham) may have more prestige, however you'll pay for it! Unless you want to go onto a PhD, I do not see the importance of a big name. Nor do people I have talked to in the field. It took me a while to actually justify for myself that graduating from UConn would be just as employable as an NYU or Fordham for my concentration. (casework/clinical)
- Cost: We all know we aren't going into the field for the big bucks, so spending $60,000+ for your Masters, when you'll most likely make less than that your first employed year seems unjustified. Even though I can afford it, it doesn't make sense to spend it.
- Researching vs. Profesional Professors: This is a big deal for me. I prefer professors who really know their stuff and have been in the field for a while, and genuinely care about the success of their students. My sister is a researching professor at, let's just say a well to do university in the New York area, and she researches first, teaches second. The priority is finishing class so they can continue their own research, and they are less available for help if you need it. Again I say, for ME, this is a huge deal, as I am on the clinical track and really prefer a mentoring professor more than a hands off.
- Location: I want to work with low-income minorities in urban areas. Perhaps I lived in a bubble, but I only thought I could find that in New York City (at least around my area). After my two years in AmeriCorps, which traveled extensively throughout the country, I realized there are similar populations almost anywhere you go. Even in my "rich" state of Connecticut, there is a huge need for advocating for individuals who are in poor living and economic situations.
This is only my personal opinion and how I reached my decision, so call me Dr. Phil but I would go with whatever feels right. As I said, I am in a unique situation and would not need to take on loans at any school, but even though I am in that position and got into "more prestigious" universities, I am still choosing my state school. It works for me. If you want a big name, or a specific location and it costs a little more, it will be worth it if you'll be happier! And once you make a decision, a huge weight lifts off your shoulders! So good luck

Hi! I know there are maybe two other threads about this year's applications to Hunter. I had my interview a while back and heard within a week I was accepted, but ultimately declined the admission offer.
If your status says "pending interview" they should have contacted you about a mandatory in person group interview.. have they yet? If not, I would call them and check in... If you have been interviewed, some people find out as soon as 3 days from the interview they were accepted, I heard after 10 days.

Tis weird because I did my application in October, so I would assume that I should have heard back by now too?
I would think so but it always helps to email or call them.. that's how I got my response! I emailed them and the next day they emailed back with my acceptance and received the official copy in the mail.

Anyone hear from University of Connecticut or San Francisco State University yet?
I heard back from Uconn beginning of March but applied in September, was complete in December.. other people on the Uconn thread said they were told within 5 weeks of applying they should hear back.

I received my acceptance via email after I emailed them multiple times pestering them for a decision! They also mailed me a copy on March 4. I am almost positive I will be attending UCONN! Goodluck to those waiting

Congrats! You've been accepted to some great schools so don't even worry about UW! I applied to Portland State, USC, CSU-Fullerton, CSU- San Bernardino. I've been accepted at the U. Of Hawaii and I haven't heard back from anywhere else.
I think I've come to terms with the anticipated rejection lol. In-state and I did my undergrad at the UW. For some reason UW doesn't accept many of their alumni into grad programs..unfortunately..
You didn't get a rejection like I did-- so stay positive! Definitely hoping for the best for you! You'll know soon! good luck

bbergstrom, I am very surprised that you didn't get into UW. From what you have posted, you seem to have a lot of social work related experience and any program would be lucky to have you. But like Mindy said, you have gotten into some great schools, so I hope you're not too bummed out.
Thanks, Paige! I'm definitely not bummed out, I was expecting it. My GPA lined up with last year's cohort, and my social service experience is just over 2 years. But in the end, it's more affordable and realistic to stay at a program on the East Coast (since i'm from CT). Definitely excited for my options, and wishing the best to all those still waiting to hear back!

Thank you. I applied for early decision but got an email on February saying there were too many applicants blah blah so I got reviewed again with regular applicants. Don't think the chances are too high..

Where you applying for advanced standing or oyr? I applied for advanced standing.
2 year program not advanced standing.. but i know someone in our group was advanced standing and already found out.

Hey, my hunter app just says "being reviewed". It changed today. I just want to know how long would I have to wait for a decision. I already had my interview. I think it went great but I still want to know if I am in or not. This waiting is driving me crazy. Lol
they told us at the interview we would hear a decision within 14 days.. i knew 12 days after my interview i was accepted.. those i know of that were rejected were notified two days before i heard.

There is another thread that people have responded to simply listed as "Hunter".. there are about 3 or 4 people that have already been accepted. I interviewed 2/22 and found out 3/6 I was accepted.

Has anyone received any word from PSU who didn't apply for early admissions?
I thought there was only one application deadline for PSU because they look at EVERY application before admitting anyone? I saw one person who said the Advanced Standing application decisions were finalized and they got in, but for regular standing, I thought there was only one deadline?
I'm interested to know if anyone has heard as well.
