  1. Hi everyone, Although I have finished majority of my applications, and I am not considering to make major changes in my statement of purpose, I wanted to ask you about how to mention which regions and countries I plan to study in my PhD studies. I am interested in studying comparative-historical sociology. In my SOP, I mentioned extensively about social processes (e.g. ethnic mobilization, capitalist development ) in my country, which obviously I am most familiar with. Then, I mentioned some other regions and countries (e.g. Latin America, India etc.) saying I might compare how these social processes took different forms in those countries. But, I did not go into detail except saying that these countries share some similar economic and social trajectories in one-two sentences. Instead I gave some examples of the questions I plan to ask. Should I explain why I chose those countries and identify similar historical and economic developments in more detail? Or should I let the admission committee know that I have not decided on which countries to study yet? I may want to make some minor changes before I submit my SOP for my remaining applications. Any ideas? Thanks.
  2. Hi everyone, I am an international student and this is my second time applying. I am interested in ethnic mobilization and class analysis from a comparative-historical perspective. My undergrad GPA is abysmal (under 3.0), my masters GPA is 3.81. I recently retook the GRE, I think my score is okay (at least for an international): V: 160, Q: 168. I have 3 three publications of which only one is in English, and I have a 6-month research experience. My TOEFL score was real bad especially on the speaking section, so I will soon take IELTS instead. Here are the schools I plan to apply for: Wisconsin-Madison, JHU, Minnesota-Twin Cities, U of Washington (or UCLA, I'm not sure yet), Pittsburgh, Binghamton, and Illinois Urbana. Some advice might be helpful right now. What do you think about the schools in my list? Do I seem like a good fit? Or, am I aiming too high? I want to apply either Washington or UCLA. Which one do you suggest considering my research interests and credentials? Thanks and good luck to you all.
  3. Hello, Could someone please suggest me a cultural anthropology program with a concentration on middle east, nationalism, and ethnicity? I'm originally a sociology student. However, I also consider applying for anthropology programs. Can you name some cultural anthropologists whose scholarly practice is similar to that of Rogers Brubaker of UCLA sociology or Andreas Wimmer of Princeton sociology? Thank you very much.
  4. Thank you for your responses. Here is an excerpt from the admission webpage of a top-30 school: "A minimum overall score of 80/120 is required for admission, while a minimum sub-score of 26/30 on the Speaking component of the test is needed to qualify for financial support consideration. We cannot waive either of these minimum score requirements under any circumstances. Neither can we waive the requirement for current TOEFL or IELTS scores." I have a score around 25 in Writing, Reading, and Listening sections. I can communicate quite well while speaking face to face, but speaking to a computer screen about trivial subjects is really difficult for me. I am not able to concentrate. I do not want to spend tons of money on this exam again. In the case of the above mentioned school, I think I may get an acceptance, but I will not be eligible for scholarship even if I got accepted. Anyways, I contacted the graduate school, hopefully they will make a satisfactory explanation.
  5. I'm an international student. My TOEFL score is below 100. How does it affect getting accepted and getting funded? Is there a strict rule that automatically invalidates my application for admission and scholarship due to bad TOEFL results? My GRE verbal score is 157, AW: 4.0. Thank you. Just to be precise my TOEFL score is 96.
  6. Can someone please tell me why Pittsburgh is considered to be such an undesired place to study. I came across some comments saying "Pittsburgh Sociology is the worst graduate school", or "I don't even know why I applied this school" etc. I'm an international applicant with research interests in ethnicity, class, and social movements. Pittsburgh seems to be a good fit for me, and I'm seriously considering it, but comments on this school is really discouraging. I know it is not ranked high, but other than that it seems quite likeable. Can you please explain to me why it is so unpopular? Thanks.
  7. The New School does not require GRE, but scholarships are very limited.
  8. I got rejected. Good luck to you all. I sincerely hope the best for you.
  9. I hope we both make it. Good luck.
  10. I'm still waiting. I wish someone could at least claim an acceptance so that we could have a better understanding of what our chances are. Good luck tinatin. And by the way, are you an international student? Do you have any competing offer from somewhere else? Thanks.
  11. Hopkins waitlister here. All I received is a bunch of rejections up to now. Congrats to all those mysterious ones who got in. Feel free to decline anytime. Little hope though...
  12. Hey bertiek. Congrats! Can I ask you a couple of questions? Is there a difference between being waitlisted and being an alternate? Is there a ranking among alternate applicants? Also, is there anything to do until a decision is made other than waiting? If not personal, can I ask you under which area are you considered? Global social change or social inequality? As an international applicant, mine is the first one. Lastly, did you hear anything about the ones who have been actually accepted since I haven't seen a single acceptance in the results page yet? Thanks, and I wish you the best.
  13. Sorry for overcrowding this forum with a new topic. Today, I have learned that I was waitlisted at JHU, just at the time when I completely lost my hopes. This application term was a failure for me since I got rejections from every single program I have applied. I never thought that I had a chance at JHU since my stats were no good, so being waitlisted now is enough to raise my hopes again. I know that they are aiming at a small cohort, and it is highly probable that people who got accepted may not lean towards declining the offer. So I have very little chance. I just wanted to know if anybody is considering to decline the offer they got from JHU. Also, if you have any knowledge on this one, can you tell me the odds that a waitlisted one be accepted at such a small program? I dont wish to put pressure on anyone who deserved their place at JHU, please dont get me wrong. Maybe I'm too impatient, but this is my last chance. I believe you can sympathize with that. Many thanks.
  14. GPA: 2.75 147/143/2.50 GPA:2.75 153/136/3.00 I got 3 rejections up to now, probably aimed too high. Pittsburgh might be a more realistic target, I think...
  15. Any rumors from Vanderbilt? What about Emory, does anyone know if all accepted ones have been notified?
  16. It would save lots of money, if I could send e-transcripts to grad schools instead of mail. Do you know if CUNY, UMass, The New School or York have this option? Thanks in advance.
  17. Hello everone, This is my first message in this forum. I'm an international student who wants to apply for a sociology Phd program in USA and Canada. My undergrad GPA is 2.8 and for upper-division 3 out of 4. My Master's sociology program GPA is 3.8. I'm taking GRE next week but I have not studied for it properly, so I'm expecing low results. My area of interests are ethnicity and class inequality, social stratification, labor sociology. I'm planning to apply for Emory, U of Washington and Binghamton in USA and York, Toronto and British Columbia in Canada. I'm looking for full funding and extra stipend. Do I have any chance with these schools? If not, can you offer me another school that I would have better chances? Thanks
