Congrats on Harvard! I am also waiting for it, but haven't heard from it yet. Anyway, I emailed the program coordinator at Penn Neuroscience (I know her actually since I did my master's degree at Penn bioengineering and took several neurosci courses), and she got back to me as the following: -------------------------- We have not finished sending out invitations. The committee is now on holiday and will reconvene in early January. JaneWe have not finished sending out invitations. The committee is now on holiday and will reconvene in early January. Jane -------------------------- So for those who applied Penn and got disappointed for not receiving anything (including me), we still have some hope. Does anyone hear from Princeton (neuroscience, not psychology)? This is my top choice and they seem to invite people before christmas...

@FutureNeuroGrad, I got interview from Emory, but I did not contact any of PI there. Of course, I did mention some names in SOP, who seems fit to my research interest. However, I did contact some of PIs, who I really really want to work with, in other schools. Some say they do not have any vote in the initial stage because everything is handled by the admission committee before interview, but others told me to indicate his or her name so that he can review my application. So I guess there's nothing to lose.

@FutureNeuroGrad, I am not sure if they are done. But they said they are inviting about 40 applicants for interview. I think you should wait for a couple of days more...!

@stmwap, I replied back to both the program director (Dr. Bassell) and coordinator (Gary....can't remember his last name). They asked me to pick one of the interview dates and I told them I will attend Feb 14-16 one. About WashU, I noticed that one of my recommender submitted his LOR 5 days after the deadline , although I have submitted mine well in advance. Well, I will just keep waiting. For those interested, I did Skype chat with Harvard neuro program director (Dr. Rick Born) last night (morning in EST). I was a bit nervous and have no idea how well I did. Anyway, he specifically said that this process is to sort out the best international applicants. And He said that Harvard will host the full admission committee meeting this week and send out the invite within this week. His hope is all interview invites done by Dec 21, but it can be extended a few days later. Lastly, congrats on UCSF people..!

@zperson, congrats on WashU! When did you submit the application? I know that WashU is a rolling basis, the earlier you submitted, the earlier they review your applications. I submitted one day before the deadline (Dec 1st I think)...Hope you did not submit later than me!! I am starting to give up on Penn....

Do schools email you when they've made a decision?
ryancho replied to yaey's topic in Waiting it Out
They notify you either by phone call or email. I don't think you need to check application website -
HS2013, regarding your question about the idea of number of applicants in the top programs, go to http://www.princeton.edu/gradschool/about/docs/ratestable/tablea/NEU.pdf I applied to Princeton. Princeton is kind enough to reveal all numbers regarding admission. This should be a good start. But please be aware that Princeton is relatively small-sized program- neuroscience program is relatively new, and still quite overlaps with psychology department. Big programs such as Stanford, Harvard, MIT should receive a far more applications....

Hi guys, I just received an invitation email for interview from Emory Neuroscience. And I confirmed with Harvard that the Skype chat is NOT a formal interview. They are still in the process of narrowing down top applicants, and this is one of their process for international students. They will send out the invitation letter starting Dec 21, and said I should expect rejection if I don't get a letter by christmas.

Hi guys, I got a reply from Harvard program coordinator. You guys are right- This is not a formal interview invitation, but I am definitely on their shortlist. Stil a very good sign. Now I am going to talk with the dean of the program next monday over Skype.....very nervous!

Hi guys, I got a weird email from Harvard today, and it says as the following ----------------------- Dear --------, Thank you for your interest in the Harvard Program in Neuroscience. We are pleased to inform you that your application has passed the initial review stage, and has been selected for further consideration by the full admissions committee. This year, we are setting up Skype conversations with a number of overseas applicants, prior to discussing their applications in the full admissions committee meeting. You are one of the applicants we would like meet in this way. The goal of these conversations is to learn more about your research and academic background, as well as your interest in our program. ------------------------ I am an international student currently residing in Seoul, Korea (went to the college and master's program in the States though). I am curious if this is same as the interview invitation, because it may be possible that they offered Skype chat as they assumed I would not be able to fly to the States for the scheduled interview weekend. I am actually willing to fly to the States. Alternatively, it may be a special stage for international applicants only...before formal invitation. I have emailed back to the program coordinator, but haven't got anything yet. What do you guys think?

Hi guys, glad to find this thread. I am an international student from South Korea (went to college in the states though), applied to 13 neuroscience programs for this year admission. Congrats to OP on upenn! I also applied for penn and haven't received anything yet I got a little bit weird email from Harvard, that I have passed "initial stage" of review, and they want to set up a Skype interview before full admission meeting. I was wondering if this is equivalent to the interview invitation: because it is possible that they offered Skype interview because I am overseas (currently in Seoul, Korea). I asked them about this, and said willing to attend the interview weekend in January, if this Skype chat request is identical to interview invitation. Good luck to you all!

Hello, I am an international student applying for PhD in neuroscience programs, aiming for top schools. I took GRE, received V161(86%), Q166(94%) and AW3.5(30%). My V and Q scores seems okay, if not perfect, but I was pretty disappointed to have 3.5 on AW section. I honestly expected 4.0 or higher. Anyway I really don't want to retake (and I think it's already late). How do you guys think having a poor AW score affect the decision in science majors? Thanks.
