  1. Arsenic, i think you're fine. Don't stress out about it too much, I guarentee the professor will either email you in a few hours understanding & asking when you'd like to reschedule and just brush it off as you being busy. Really, no need to worry!
  2. Yay capers!!!! So so so well deserved!!!

  4. Yeah I have a sister in PVD and I get the same vibe. I think the main difference between brooklyn and baltimore is stress level due to money. All my friends in brooklyn are really stressed because they have to constantly hustle to cover their basics, where as here if you find the right places you can pay as low as $300 for rent and $100 for studio space in the cooler areas/artist buildings etc. I have friends who run nice storefront galleries with rent of $300 a month split between 3 people, etc. The money makes a difference, I think. Plus the city is super into it's arts funding right now so we have things like the Sondheim Prize (25k and finalists get a show in the BMA), the Baker Artist Awards (three $25k grants yearly), B-Grants (nine $1k grants yearly), Awesome Grants, etc... plus smaller galleries like sophiajacob, nudashank, current space, open space, etc. Actually for a while the city was giving many artists/curators ground floor gallery space and $10k for renovations if they applied for it. I don't remember what that program was called but I went to a few shows for it in 2011, 2012. I will tell you that it doesn't really have a blue chip scene and the collectors mostly come from DC, but I don't think that bothers anyone too much. i'm originally from new york city but i think baltimore is kind of a cool place to live ~right now~ if you are looking to really work on your art, show it, and live a good quality of life while doing it. Brooklyn is awesome, no doubt, but there is sooo much stuff going on here I haven't even scratched the surface of, and a lot of people launch pad from baltimore into LA/Chicago/NYC so it's not like there are no connections drawing you to those places either, post graduation. A good amount of people stay by choice, actually, if that tells you anything. here are some of those galleries & things i was talking about: http://nudashank.tumblr.com/ http://sophiajacob.com/ http://www.openspacebaltimore.com/ bakerartistawards.org
  5. Nudibranches, i feel like now is a really good time to be in baltimore and i am actually really sad i am leaving. The art scene is on the cusp of something great but is still really accessible.
  6. I mean, Barnes and Noble usually hires cafe workers with little experience. Just don't tell them you are going to school in the fall. Apple store, etc. Retail. Or a cafe, maybe there are a few locally. Honestly, I'd try to perhaps leave the super advanced degrees off.
  7. I met Stefan Petranek this past weekend and it made me wish I had applied to that program! He's really cool, very chill dude. Good luck with funding!!
  8. I vote travel - pick somewhere and work at a hostel for room and board, perhaps... much less grinding!
  9. To the first part - usually in the official acceptance letter there are instructions on what each school wants you to do. Some ask for a letter of intent, some just want a deposit, etc. To the second part -I sent a thank you note to the professor who interviewed me and told them I was honored. Quick and 2 lines but didn't commit to anything within it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for neighborhoods around the graduate MFA studios at UCLA? I am trying to price comparison.. Any good landlords? (or bad ones...) suggestions, etc?
  11. I'v been told by multiple professors to be up front about other better offers.... Anything you can avoid paying you should. Even 3 or 5k doesnt sound like much but it makes a difference when you are considering loans for sure.
  12. Ucla decision site: https://www.gradadmissions.ucla.edu/newapp/Login.asp?topage=AdmissionStatus.asp
  13. Kwonberry - check the spam of the email you applied with, i got an admissions dept email thursday morning to check the decision site (which is separate from the app site)
  14. UCLA accept via the website! Just got an email
  15. Hmm i dont know, a painter friend also had a really weird one and then was accepted. Who knows!
  16. Man seems like massArt is all about the super mean/weird/seemingly disinterested interview huh? I wonder what's up with that - i havent heard of anyone having a 'nice' interview there.

Rent Control is a thing of the past. If you find one, dang, don't ever leave it!
  18. Did they call you back and tell you about the move to admission or did they tell you on the phone the first time? Congrats!!!!!
  19. I don't think a thank you note would be out of line. Just keep it short and acknowledge that it's an honor and then you look grateful without committing.
  20. Have you read a history of love by nicole krauss?
  21. Typically no, just because of the ways admissions offices work. Usually they do them in more manageable batches (for letters) for the school post office's sake. So either alphabetically or regionally, you may get your letter faster if you live closer to the school or are further up in the alphabet.
  22. i like to live on the wild side
  23. Bemis Applications are due tomorrow y'all! www.bemiscenter.org/residency/
  24. I dunno, seems like southern california is all about the casual surprise.
