Bengston - thank you!! -
Yale interview! Preface: I'm kind of broke as fck, so i only had a certain amt of $ to spend on apps. So I narrowed down my list by faculty i really liked and just applied to yale and ucla. Dumb, I know, but. Dream faculty.

yeah i took a dig up to march and saw only new media people getting interviews -
perhaps have a professor or friend who has done an MFA program give it a once over? Sounds maybe a little long to me, but some programs like UMD require 1000 word statements, so - I'd really just check it with someone who has a critical eye.

More of a point of curiosity than anything else - Does anyone know if UCLA photo interviews or not? I went through the archives but couldn't find anything too definitive. -

This explains my feelings exactly with USC Roski. I'm planning on shooting the faculty I'm interested in and talking to them a little bit about their philosophy towards photography and where they feel the program is going. It's such a cool program but I don't know if I am the type of artist they typically go for. Worst they could do is just not answer my email, right? Good luck to you! -
I used to work in an Admissions office and it really is sort of like that. Seriously. Especially on a deadline day, qué horor! Ususally a lot of people will open mail, and the person that puts in in your file isn't necessarily the person that marks it into the system.. stuff like that. So when stuff is 'lost' it's usually 'found' in the same place, it just missed being marked or other human error. And that's for the apps that come all together! Loose credentials is a whole other nightmare.

^ don't forget Djerassi! Or Vermont Studio Center. I think VSC is a good stepping stone for a lot of people for larger/more competitive residencies. You may want to look into Kimmel Harding Nelson, too. -

Did some digging, apparently it's a problem within chrome and safari and the Apply Yourself program. Firefox should let anyone having the same problem on a mac copy and paste. A few other schools use it too, like USC and SAIC so folks might have the same problem with different schools... From the Apply yourself App's FAQ: -

This is a weird one. Is anyone having trouble pasting into the UCLA input fields for the essays? I'm trying to paste my SOP and it won't let me. (both on chrome and safari on a 2011 mac..) I have access to some other computers but it's a bit of a hike, so i'm just wondering if anyone has had this problem or luck on another browser? -

Ah well. We shall see! -
you could always live in Long Island City. I've heard (can't confirm) that it is nyc-affordable. Have you looked at Padmapper.com? it's a pretty great app and I use to to kind of scope out areas. Are you from a city originally? If you are, don't be afraid of moving outside recently gentrified areas. Public transit is very good, runs all night, and even I can get out to the 'hipper' areas of Brooklyn from the SBX fairly easily. Do yourself a favor and get an unlimited metrocard. It hurts the wallet when you first get it, but trust me, you can easily spend $7-10 a day on mass transit here if you are not careful, so you could find yourself spending anywhere from 150 to 200 on mass transit monthly without even realizing it! Talk to others and see who has landlords they like - my dad's a property manager in the BX and he leases most of his open apartments from referrals and people who call. Paying a broker is definitely not necessary here! Food. Ah. Food. This is a contentious one. Some people can do it for cheap, but i find if i am hanging out in gentrified areas I can spend up to $20 on a 'good but not like, gourmet' meal with food and drink (for a dinner) The good thing for you is that there are a lot of areas that have delicious food from different countries - again, occasionally a trek but what are you moving to NYC for if not to explore? for less expensive than their 'elevated ethnic cuisine' counterparts. As for groceries, there is a trader joes on 14th at union sq, Met, Gristedies and Pathmark are your friends.. Pathmark has some really good sales. As for coffee, stick to the cart coffe and away from starbucks, easily save like $4 a day depending on what kind of coffee you get. Starbucks does have free wi-fi though and many of the "indie" coffeeshops are now into the whole "we don't do wi-fi" thing... Don't bring your car unless you wind up in what is commonly referred to as the "outer-boroughs" (usually this means 35-40 minutes out of manhattan into a borough but, like most things here, everyone will tell you differently) Depending on what music scene you are into, a lot of the indie rock scene is in west brooklyn, along the L line of the subway. There's punk and rap almost everywhere, though. As a teenager I pretty much stuck to the Bronx for punk shows and lower manhattan (RIP the 2nd iteration of the Knit!). Ok. That's all i can think of right now. Any other questions feel free to pm me!

Re: Yale application, does anyone know if you can submit photographic diptychs/triptychs as one piece? From their app "Do not format images in any presentation program (e.g., PowerPoint, Keynote), or include composite images (more than one work per file). Still image files may be sent in jpeg, png, bmp, or tiff format." I am trying to figure out if a diptych would violate that rule. Anyone know for sure? (Sorry if this seems ridiculous, I'd just hate to be disqualified on a technicality ya know?) -

after looking at your website, perhaps the title of the series, and then like "Performance at the Ubehebe Crater, Death Valley" is what i imagine to go in the 'description' section. Though I think "outer hole" and "long distance" could do with maybe like one more clue as to what happened in the performance, unless there are videos, in which case i think just where/and what it was is ok. Hope that helped? -

Totally. I think I am just stressed because I feel like I got a late start on writing, and it's my first year applying. thanks for the outline - will have to take a fresh look using that criteria. i feel you on this! sending good vibes your way. Also, if anyone likes to proofread I'd love to get any and all opinions on my essay, especially from people who don't know me/aren't super familiar with me. I'm just curious as to how everything is coming across! -
