  1. A half inch of snow in Nashville causes all the schools to close (actually, pretty much the whole city shuts down), and a run on food and water at the grocery stores. It's pretty ridiculous. We are supposed to have 5-10 inches tonight.

  2. U.S. History, specifically religion. Right now, my research is focused upon federal harassment and prosecution of conscientious objectors during World War I.

Baylor's history department is pretty different. They take 2-3 a year, and the only fields available for study are American or English religious history.

  3. Sorry Josh!

Congrats on Baylor and good luck with the rest!

What would be your top choice at the moment from the ones you are still to hear back from?

That's a good question. Yale and Stanford were my top choices, and Yale was my best fit out of all the programs I applied....

Really not sure what to think about the interview at Baylor.

  4. That's true, it doesn't take much to draft a decent letter.

Lots of academics suck at writing. Obviously the chair needs a copy editor.

I'm actually really annoyed right now because the email they sent me had a link, supposedly to the decision letter. The link is wrong, it sent me to the staff end of their application site. The first part of the URL is "admit". Since they have been pretty consistent at sending out rejections around Feb 21-22 for past several years, those things combined got my hopes up just a little bit.

    Jerks.

  5. Good luck to everyone today! I hope we hear back from some more schools! Is anyone else surprised that it's already lunchtime on the East coast and not much activity yet??

I figured that Vandy for sure would release today.

Anna Leigh, I thought so too, though I've heard from two people now that the Vandy history department is fighting for an additional slot with the Graduate School before sending out admits.

Did you apply to Vandy? If so, what field?

  6. US is always our biggest field. It took 5 admits this year.

    Other fields - Africa (1), Britain (1), EME (2), East Asia (3 - all China this year), History of Science (2), Jewish (1), Latin America (1), Middle East/Central Asia (2), Medieval Europe (1), Modern Europe (2), Russia/E. Europe (2), Transnational/International/Global (1).

Any idea how many people applied?

  7. Looks like Stanford admissions are rolling out.

And there were also several Stanford admissions last week as well....and then with the person above who stated that the list had been sent to current students....very frustrating.

  8. Current Stanford grad students were emailed the list of admits this evening. Congrats to anybody who's on it. :) We took 24 admits (happy to break down by field if anyone wants to know - most fields only take one or two).

Would love to know the breakdown by fields. US especially.

  9. Guys... it is starting to look like I am not getting in anywhere... maybe I should start trolling around usajobs for a Park Ranger position?

That is actually my Plan B as well. My former career is in Natural Resources/Land Management law enforcement. I've got a couple of aps in with the Forest Service and Army Corps of Engineers for Ranger/Tech positions.

  10. Hello y'all, congrats to all the admits and best wishes to the yet-to-be!

I have a situation here and hope to gain some insights from you. I got into a Ph.D program with five years funding + etc and a substantially funded MA program from an institution, in which, according to the faculty, would give me a great chance to continue my doctoral degree. The two schools are both top-notch, but I have been dreaming of getting trained under the faculty at the latter. what should I choose?

Congrats on your acceptances.  That is kind of a hard question to answer without more information.  Does one program fit you better than the other?  Does one program offer more funding than another?  How certain are the faculty that you could continue?  You might also want to consider mentioning to the MA program that you have a PhD admit from the other school and see if they can give you a better offer...

  11. I just got into Brown!

I got into Albany, but I'm most likely going to turn down the offer. I've just been waiting to get more info on funding from Minn and Davis before I make that decision. The department at Albany is wonderful, so this totally sucks, but I know it's a good problem to have. I know they do admission in waves, and once they hear back from the first wave they start admitting the second, so hopefully someone else gets good news :)

Congrats to you both, thats awesome!
