Yes, they really are champs in the DGS at SFU. Its nice to hear we're not the only ones waiting. Why do grad studies do this?
-
Please share when you know. This is as far as I got with them yesterday (although they told me the lists "may have" already been distributed, but they weren't sure).
-
I'd be curious to know the answer to this too. It'll give me something to think about whilst waiting for my results.
-
From my understanding, both the university you applied to and the university you applied from will have access to the your results (if either of them is in Canada). If neither is in Canada, I can't offer any advice (sorry!).
-
To those who have heard news (and aren't off at the pub yet) could you please post your schools?
-
Wow!! Look at everyone go! Congratulations to all!!! And to all who haven't heard form their DGS yet, or have heard that they know and won't bother to tell you--wow, that is pretty fuckerly. Now we see why students get a little upset at those poor dears every once in a while....
-
eeeek! Thats two--enter panic mode. (congratulations!!)
-
Ditto. Others? If everyone waits to hear from the efforts of others, without taking a stab themselves, we'll be here for awhile....
-
Yes, can anyone else confirm this? I get an out-of-office autoreply from my contact at my university. The bugger. And Brewer--bad news, man. I'm very sorry to hear that
-
Haha--this is what I wanted to say but didn;t have the patience to type it out--you're awesome violet!
-
I can only imagine the chaos that would ensue if each of us was to phone our DGS and SSHRC and Departmental Secretaries every time we check this forum...surely, there's a greater good at work here where the 'harassment' to the poor dears at our DGS and SSHRC is diffused by our communication here. And, even if there wasn't, the DGS, SSHRC, and your Departmental Secretaries all work, in part FOR YOU. Answering polite questions is part of their job. And as for the "you're a Phd student, get used to delaying gratification" comment, I would suggest its more along the lines of "you're a Phd Student, get used to sticking up for yourself".
-
Well, no point in prolonging this any longer-I'm going to go out and celebrate before the event horizon hits. That way, tomorrow I'll either wake up to good news, or I can just return to bed and sleep my sorrow off...

Fair enough point. However, a true cynic would point out that many aspects of your research proposal can slightly change between the time that you submit the proposal, and the time that you finish the research. With this in mind, I imagine it might be possible to write a research proposal that would be tailored to the research strengths/ interests/ theoretical frameworks at your home institution--and perhaps it could change later. You, of course, couldn't entirely change your thematic area (taking SSHRC funding from a proposal aimed at, say, Art History--and then doing research in Nanotechnology) BUT you do have a certain amount of flexibility, I think. The purpose of the research proposal is to gain funding. Full Stop. Of course, lying, etc. should not be done. BUT it is realistic to expect that your research will change between the time of your proposal and your end product. If we acknowledge this to be true, then some might argue that tailoring the project in a way that maximizes your chances would seem acceptable.

I think this is good advice, and would say that it IS always possible. Since your funding is tied to you, and not your school, a student who "changed their mind" in the gap between when they applied for the SSHRC and when they received it can just take their SSHRC to whichever school they want. When your application is going through the university application process I would be amazed if it didn't make some difference to the committee, whether officially or not, if you were intending on bringing the funding to their school. The amount of difference it would make is up to debate, but I would think that a student who wanted to maximize their chances of getting their application to Ottawa should say they "intend" to pursue the degree at their home school. Of course, I would not advocate saying anything outright dishonest, but we should all be proficient enough with our words to tell the committee what they want to hear--whilst leaving our options open. Sad that the system is this way, but lets be honest--this process is a game, and one should know the rules.

Quite obviously, canadiangirl78 and snasser are just having a little fun with us. There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that SSHRC will release the results on monday, as that's what they said they are going to do. At least that's what I'm telling myself going into the weekend.... oh, the horror of it all--it'll probably won;t come until june
-
It is my understanding that they rescore all applications in the final round. I'm afraid she's in the same boat as the rest of us, waiting 'til next week for news. If she applied independently she might consider contacting the Grad secretary at her future school so that, come next week, she may have a bit of relationship in place to politely inquire about her results.
-
A little bland for my tastes--I prefer richer food. Lets wait until next week when we're all rolling in it. Until then, SSHRC is the enemy, dammit!!
-
Indeed. I had my terminology wrong--thanks for the clarification!! What I was trying to address was the A vs B list for *MA* students. I confused B-list with alternates. SSHRC *MA* site says: "The university evaluates all applications in accordance with SSHRC
-
A-List means baically "recommended for a SSHRC. B-List means basically "recommended as an alternate for a SSHRC" Many many months ago, when you applied for the SSHRC, one of three things probably happened: you were recommended (A-List=good odds), you were recommended (B-List=bad odds), or you were not recommended/ your application was not forwarded to Ottawa (=no odds). If you recieved a letter saying your application had been forwarded then you were on the A or B list, and hopefully the letter said which one. At least that's my understanding. (the above only applies if you applied through a school, I don't really know what happens with direct apps)
-
Firstly, Congrats to all you successful MA applicants!! (and here's fingers crossed for us PhD apps). If I was in the shoes of the MA students whose grad studies office won;t tell them, I would certainly march directly down to their office and (politely) ask to be notified. Perhaps explain to them that you have friends at other schools whose grad studies department have access to the results through a secure website or whatever, so you assume that your school does too (and, if not, ask why not--they'll get them for you). Explain your situation with leaving town. Tell them its fine if you didn;t get one, but you would really like to know regardless and you won't be upset even if not--tell them it'll be a relief. Keep in mind that you pay tuition to the school, and the school should reasonably serve you. Unfortunately, it seems that the Grad Studies offices seem to forget their obligations to students sometimes. Feel obliged to remind them.
-
Yeah, I would certainly much appreciate anyone posting as soon as they hear results through their Grad Studies or elsewhere. My school is notoriously uncooperative in such matters--so an indication of when to harass the hell out of them wold be valuable!

So, who having applied to Oxford and been accepted, has heard back from colleges? I applied into the Jan 23 stream, and was accepted, but haven't heard any word yet. Its pretty hard to make much of a decision without knowing anything about funding there (which from my understanding comes mostly from the colleges--please feel free to set me straight if I'm wrong about that...)

I heard something about SSHRC reinterpreting the business degree focus with a rather broader mandate, which I took to mean that they wouldn;t use the new blingers exclusively for business degrees (eg. see: http://www.mcmaster.ca/ors/sources/sshr ... intro2.htm ) Can anyone tell me what an OGS is? Did I miss something?
