Chances at Comp Lit Programs?
DontHate replied to DontHate's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Well, they weren't trying to be mean, I guess. But they were basically saying that I had only posted my stats to make them feel bad, and other ridiculous accusations along those lines. I mean read this thread, it's all about the "zero sum game" that basically makes people angry at anyone who they feel might pose a threat to their spot in some program (which is inherently ridiculous, since I'm not even applying to English programs). And then the question I asked in another thread, about what people plan to do with their degrees, was also upsetting to a lot of people (though admittedly, I did ask in a rather provocative way... life is dull.) The end. -

YEAH I THOUGHT THAT'S WHAT EVERYONE ELSE WAS DOING ON HERE!? I didn't say anything about your first response. It was perfectly fine. I had no problem with it. -

Enough. I don't care. You are being annoying. I didn't tell you that you "have no sense of irony," I just said you seemed to be taking one comment I made very literally. Based on your reaction, you obviously take yourself waaaay too seriously. -

I'm a jerk on here, this is true. It's hard not to be, with the reactions I got starting from my very first post. I'm just majorly irritable online... -

I wasn't trying to write a thesis about post-colonialism. I made an offhand comment, and you got offended, and then this. No, I probably won't be on here by the time results start coming in. I just joined to let off some steam after submitting my apps, and I'm finding out very quickly that this isn't the right place for me. Everyone with the downton abbey gifs... not my crowd. -

The joke is on no one, because you're not being funny. Just pedantic. -

The community on here is only supportive of people who are exactly like them: the longshots with abysmal stats who are applying to the same slew of crappy programs and bemoaning the unlikelihood that they'll get in anywhere. Doesn't anyone else find that tiresome? -

I just think it's funny how touchy everyone is on here all the time. As if anything anyone tells you on gradcafe will have a real impact on the fate of your applications... or your life. It's best not to take everything so seriously. -

You guys are so boring. I understand that your egos are fragile, etc etc, but if all you want to do is be hostile and debate, then at least debate in an interesting way? Sigh. I need to find somewhere else to waste my time. -

It's not that you're being picky, it's more that you can't understand irony or subtext without having it spelled out for you. -

The irony is that I'm just a ballsy lady myself. I don't think of whores as being solely female. -

Well it wasn't intended to be boasting, and I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. -

Is the original post "boasting"? It's only boasting if interpreted that way. My gpa is far from perfect, I have no academic publications, and as I said, my writing sample kind of blows. I don't think it's boasting to list your stats and ask for an appraisal. I didn't know the baseline in this forum (and I still don't) but I just naturally assumed it was at or above my level. -

That's an interesting view. I don't think validation need come at the cost of other people's feelings. I think that has more to do with the fragility of other people's feelings, rather than the actual price of the validation. Waiting does suck. Let's share poems. Here's one I really like: Effort at Speech Between Two People (Muriel Rukeyser) Speak to me. Take my hand. What are you now? I will tell you all. I will conceal nothing. When I was three, a little child read a story about a rabbit who died, in the story, and I crawled under a chair : a pink rabbit : it was my birthday, and a candle burnt a sore spot on my finger, and I was told to be happy. : Oh grow to know me. I am not happy. I will be open: now I am thinking of white sails againsta sky like music, like glad horns blowing, and birds tilting, and an arm about me. There was one I loved, who wanted to live, sailing. : Speak to me. Take my hand. What are you now? When I was nine, I was fruitily sentimental, fluid : and my widowed aunt played Chopin, and I bent my head on the painted woodwork, and wept. I want noe to be close to you. I would link the minutes of my days close, somehow, to your days. : I am not happy. I will be open. I have liked lamps in evening corners, and quiet poems. There has been fear in my life. Sometimes I speculate On what a tragedy his life was, really. : Take my hand. First my mind in your hand. What are you now? When I was fourteen, I had a dreams of suicide, and I stood at a steep window, at sunset, hoping toward death : if the light had not melted clouds and pains to beauty, if light had not transformed that day, I would have leapt. I am unhappy. I am lonely. Speak to me. : I will be open. I think he never loved me: he loved the bright beaches, the little lips of foam that ride small waves, he loved the veer of gulls: he said with a gay mouth: I love you. Grow to know me. : What are you now? If we could touch one another, if these our separate entities could come to grips, clenched like a Chinese puzzle ... yesterday I stood in a crowded street that was live with people, and no one spoke a word, and the morning shone. Everyone silent, moving... Take my hand. Speak to me. -

lawl, don't call me bro. -
I was wondering if any of you grad cafe'ers had any experience crossing from professional to personal boundaries in your relationships with professors. This doesn't necessarily mean anything salacious. For example, are any of you genuinely close friends with your professors? I feel like this is more common in grad school than undergrad, since the professors start to view a grad student as more of an equal at that point. Discuss (as they say)...
