  1. Does anyone know anything about the new chem buildings at Princeton and Caltech?
  2. Congrats to everyone that got in to Harvard. Based on the number of admissions on the results page it looks like I probably didn't make the cut...oh well, I'm pretty happy with what I've got!
  3. True story, PM me if/when you decide to visit
  4. I think that mistreatment is definitely a no-brainer for this classification. However, on the research end consider that most projects will require 50+ hours a week for years to advance and, more importantly, you are expected to advance them significantly during your stay. If you aren't inspired to do your research it will probably be a lot harder to put your nose to the grindstone and end up with a good thesis/publication record/LOR IMO. Sure, you'll have the name brand of prof Hardass Slavedriver at BSDU, but you could well end up with bupkis due to the above factors.
  5. Caltech admissions have started to trickle out.
  6. Ceteris Paribus one of the rate determining steps for progressing on a project is how often you get to use that one critical instrument. Be it NMR, MS, or X-ray there are those frustrating times when you have to just twiddle your thumbs in line while waiting to get a crucial piece of data. I, personally, would like to minimize this wait time by attending an institution where (ideally) intruments are effective and plentiful. To enable this: please post what you know about the facilities of schools you're familiar with!
  7. One of the worst decisions you can make: work for a less-that-ideal PI. In case you didn't follow the Chemjobber–Not the Lab back and forth last week about the mental toll of gradschool I have provided a link to the first post: http://chemjobber.blogspot.ca/2013/01/is-graduate-school-in-chemistry-bad-for.html Gradschool is definitely not a time that you want to give someone that you are not 100% committed to working for that much power over your life and future.
  8. I, myself, very nearly applied to csu: Rovis is a JACS/ANIE factory!
  9. Apparently UC Irvine's admissions committee met yesterday; best of luck to everyone else who applied!
  10. Hey all, I am applying to a mix of high/low prestige schools (all very good in my research area): Princeton, Harvard, Caltech, UWisconsin Madison, UC Irvine, UOttawa I doubt that I'll get into all of these programs, however one is more than enough IMHO. Rough Stats (if anyone's curious): General GRE: 95/71/73 (bonus points for guessing what chemistry I do) Chem GRE: 87 GPA: 78.5 (~3.6) three solid LORs, three summers of research experience and third author on a major publication Best of luck to everyone.
