I got a call from SUNY Purchase yesterday that I got in with around $7000 off the already pretty low bill. They told me it would be around $7000 left over to pay, so pretty much in-state tuition, then i can teach my second year and get another $2k off. The offer I got from Syracuse was $5500 to pay and then opportunities to teach after my first year, but Purchase is a 2 year program, and Syracuse is 3. I really like Purchase's program, faculty and location more than Syracuse, but the money is making me rethink everything. How does negotiating go? Has anyone ever done that? Any thoughts on Purchase vs. Syracuse?

Purchase was awesome. I would really love to go there. How were you notified that they accepted you? I'm waiting to hear back after going for my interview.

i guess the departments are different, i got this email back today... "We are completing our review process this week and final decisions will be made shortly. I will be in contact soon." hmmm, either way, it's taking a really long time and i have to make decisions soon.

I'm still waiting from UCONN as well, but I haven't even had an interview. I emailed them and they told me they are "working on the admissions process." How long does it typically take to hear back after interviews anyway? I interviewed with purchase yesterday, and Syracuse wants my decision in early April...and still nothing from UCONN (although that probably means no I suppose).

I was notified two days ago that I got an interview with SUNY Purchase, in case anyone is waiting to hear from them. I'm excited because I got rejected from there last year. Also, I have been emailing back and forth with Syracuse, and they have asked me to formulate some questions for them, which makes me a little nervous because I'm not quite sure what to ask. Does anyone have any experience with a school asking you to bring questions to them? I feel like I mostly just want to know what the bill is gonna look like. Did anyone out there apply to UCONN? I'm wondering when I'm supposed to be hearing back from them.

I just heard back from Syracuse today that they are "interested in me becoming a part of the graduate program." And I also received that "top ten" email. Hopefully you will be hearing from them soon.

I was thinking I'd use my artist statement for exhibitions...I guess I'll minimize how much I go in depth about my work in my statement of purpose then. Thanks!

Hello! Working on my UCLA application for MFA Painting...and it's the only school that asks for both a statement of purpose and artist's statement. SOP Prompt- "Please state your purpose in applying for graduate study. Describe your scholarly and research area(s) of interest, experiences that contributed to your preparation in the field, and your plans for your future occupation or profession. Briefly describe experiences that have prepared you for advanced study or research, and provide any additional information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study at UCLA. If you are applying for a research masters or doctoral program, you are encouraged to indicate specific research interests and potential faculty mentors." Artist's Statement Prompt- "In addition to submitting the required Statement of Purpose, please use this section to submit a short statement about your artwork. The statement should be no longer than 3000 characters (approximately 500 words)." It's really throwing me off my application groove...any thoughts??

My professors were all actually a little taken aback as well. They all said it goes against everything that has been the precedent before. I had to reshoot all of my work because I had masked out everything around my paintings in white. Makes sense this is coming from Yale then, I suppose. I decided to just use regular photos against the wall without any scale reference. I hope at least a bit of the huge scale comes through in the photo.

Finishing up my application for Yale, and it says this in regard to your images... "In the review process, the admissions committee is concerned with scale and the tactility of the work. For this reason, paintings and drawings must be photographed showing the surrounding wall or background. Paintings and drawings must not be digitally masked in black to the edges of the work. Three-dimensional works should also show the surrounding space and context." I am wondering how much context to include? My paintings are very large (one is 9 ft. tall) and that is very important in assessing them. You really can't truly experience the larger ones until you see them in person. So I am wondering if it would be inappropriate to include, for instance, the ladder I used to paint it next to it?
