$300-$500 for a $100k loan? Don't forget to add property tax, insurance, and mortgage insurance if you don't put 20% down. Still, depending on the city, buying can be cheaper than renting. We are looking at doing the same thing. We found an older home with a new roof and a new central AC unit for $80,000 in Minnesota. Rent in the same area would cost us $800-1000 for a 3 bedroom. Campus housing is out of the question as we have dog that we can't separate from our son's side. Great thread.

Working Internationally as SLP?
travelnguy replied to pinkberry's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
It is quite easy here in Peru. I have met two ASHA certified SLPs in Lima. One is from the US and the other is from Peru. They charge $40-50 per hour and work out of their homes. Both only work with fluency disorders. One has her time split 70% Spanish and 30% English, while the other only works with English clients. I live in a large city north of Lima and there is not one certified SLP here. Here, PTs do the work of SLPs and it is not very good. My neighbor has a friend who is a PT and I was able to observe her. She knows that she doesn't know what she is doing, but she does the best she can with no training. Upon getting my certification, I plan on coming back to Peru and hopefully starting some kind of training for SLPs or SLPAs or even the PTs. As far as visas to work here. Money talks. If you have money to open up a business, you can do it. There are many licensed chiropractors here from France and England and I am sure that they just get a business license and open up shop. -
2013 SLP Admissions Thread!

I have been in contact with one of the professors at UNK and was told that because of the snow storm, the committee had not yet met. They will be meeting and sending out notifications around mid-March. Good luck to you. -

Got on the wait list for University of Nebraska Omaha. Happy to finally hear something. How many people get admitted off of a wait list? Should I hold my breath or is this as good as a rejection? -

Me too. I swear I am just staring at my inbox and updating the results search. The worst is when someone for a university where I applied got an acceptance letter, others wait listed, and I haven't heard anything. I really despise groupon emails right now too. -

That is so great that you got to observe for 100 hours. I was able to observe for two full weeks at a hospital in St. Petersburg. What made it amazing is that it is one of the few hospitals in the area that offers trauma, acute, and rehabilitation services in speech pathology. Trauma was definitely my favorite with acute care being second. I was able to observe multiple Videostroboscopes and swallow studies daily. -

I agree. That is happening with one of my schools. I see a slew of rejection letters went out and I got nothing. Also, a number of people have updated stating they are on the wait list. Again, nothing for me. I hope this means good news. -

Now the stomach sickness really starts to set in. Nebraska is sending out acceptance and wait list emails already. I am just staring at my inbox waiting for it to update. -
My GRE Score for MS in CS at Top univ - Should I Retake?
travelnguy replied to CS_Freak's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
I would have to agree with everyone about retaking the test. I am not a computer science student, nor do I have a math background, but achieving a better score should be possible for someone applying to CS. I took the GRE pretest and got an unmentionable score. I spent four months working with the Manhattan Test prep books and saw my score on the actual GRE jump up to 157. It was a double digit jump. I am preparing to take the GRE again after completing the CliffsNotes Math Review for Standardized Tests and my practice scores are all above 160. I wish you all the luck in the world. -
Grad School Attire - What will you wear?
travelnguy replied to travelnguy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
That is awesome advice. That gives me a reason to contact all the schools where I applied. I don't know why I didn't think to ask for handbooks before. -
That statement fits me perfectly. I am interested in working in a medical setting for about ten to fifteen years; learning as much as possible about traumatic brain injuries and everything that goes with them. I then would like to do a clinical doctorate and move to Peru (where I now am) and teach doctors or future speech-language pathologists. There is a dire need here and I don't see any change in the near future. Medical and school SLPs are really needed down here.

Have you thought about what to buy for grad school? I have been using my phone to do recordings but I thought I would upgrade to a voice recorder. I was thinking of this one on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Digital-Flash-Recorder-ICD-PX312/dp/B004M8SSZK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361210156&sr=8-1&keywords=voice+recorder as the quality of the recordings is supposedly phenomenal. I am also thinking about getting a keyboard case for my iPad. I thought it would be lighter to carry around and would be perfect to take notes on. Not to mention the battery life. Seems like most classes in SLP are offered 2 or 3 days per week; meaning, long days. What else would make our lives easier? Any recommendations on messenger bags? Would like to look professional, but still be able to carry books and an iPad/laptop around.

I have seen this discussion in other threads, but I think it is relevant to post here as well. What are you planning on wearing while in grad school? Many of us will be in clinics from day 1, therefore I think we would have to dress nice, but comfortable. While job shadowing in a hospital, both men and women wore pants, button up shirts, and lab coats. Do you think, as a man, I should wear a tie during clinical, or would business casual suffice?

I thought about Iowa, but the tuition was the factor for me. My wife and I are moving to the states are are wanting to set up in the Midwest. I applied to schools in Nebraska and Minnesota. -

I am just finishing up the 2nd Bachelor's degree program at USU in Comm D. My GPA is 3.89 at USU. My previous GPA was 3.17 in a completely unrelated field back in 1999. I got a 153V, 156Q and 4.0 on the essay portion of the GRE. I was a supervisor at a financial firm for 4 years, an English teacher for 5 years, and I have been vounteering in Peru for the past 9 months. I applied to University of Nebraska (Omaha, Lincoln, and Kearney), Univ of Minnesota (Duluth), Minnesota State Univ Mankato, and Eastern New Mexcio University (as my backup, if there is a backup in this competitive field). -
My universities have still yet to receive my GRE scores. I called ETS to get a bit more information. Again, I received great service. I was informed that each university chooses how it wants to receive scores. They can receive them via paper, CD, or electronically. The ETS representative informed me that all four of the universities that I applied to only accept score reports via mail. These reports are mailed out every Tuesday and Thursday. ETS will tell you when you reports were mailed and will also tell you which cycle number they are in. You can ask the university if they have received which ever cycle your scores are in. For example, mine are in cycle 21. 3 of 4 universities have received them, they just have not processed them. A big relief as my deadline is fast approaching.

I did apply to the Lincoln campus. I am applying to their Masters of Communication Disorders program. I have not heard of one program in the U.S. that does not have a 100% job rate after graduation, so, my career prospects should not be affected by the university no longer being affiliated with AAU. I didn't do as well as I wanted, but I think I did good enough to get into grad school. I got a 155V and 158Q with a 4.5 on my essays.

I took the test on January 2, 2013 and I got my scores back on January 11. I wasn't expecting them until January 18, at the earliest.

SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants

Anyone applied or planning to apply to the University of Nebraska (Lincoln, Omaha, or Kearney)? I really like the Kearney curriculum, the Lincoln professors, and the city of Omaha for my wife.
