  1. I've been working really hard for the past few months to get my thesis done. I was hoping to have a final draft by the end of October. Anyway, I submitted a rough first draft to my advisor last week and just received her comments. I am completely panicked and so discouraged! She says she fully believes I am making an important argument, but that it's not clear enough, wants me to rewrite the introduction, change the structure, says I repeat myself too much, etc etc etc. And the worst part is, I don't understand some of what she wants me to change and I'm not sure I have all the data that the changes would require. She is away on conference right now, so I am hoping meeting with her next week will help clarify things. The reason I want to get the thesis dones ASAP is because I was offered a great post-doc opportunity (but would have to be in position in January).
  2. Well, I called Gerry the other day and she told me that yes reversions are being processed but that she'd had no reversions on the Sociology list. I asked her if the SSHRCC-funded cohort refusal was in and she told me she had no way to know why people refused OGS scolarships. Makes sense. I guess there is no deadline to cancel one's OGS. But my hopes are dashed. Ah well, student loan, here i come.
  3. Thanks Jlee! You should have seen the dance of joy I did around the office when I found out I was awarded the internship. I seem to recall running to my supervisor's office and jumping up and down as I was telling her the news. I hope you ge to go as well (could you work it in your studies?)
  4. I'll be doing an 8 months internship in Barcelona and have to find my own accomodations. Any tips on how to proceed? Of course, as a student, my main concern is to find something affordable. Also, for those of you who have been/lived in Barcelona, recommandations on where to hang out are welcomed.
  5. Still no news here... I haven't received an OGS grant (am on the reversion list), and I have 3 A and 3 A+ on my transcript (not sure what grade point average that gives me at UofT). For information, I was a SSHRC recipient for the last 2 years - so I guess it's a good GPR. That funding ran out as I am now in my fifth year but I still qualified for OGS funding. I started this thread for the people on the reversion list, but you could look up the OGS thread if you want to hear from people who actually got the scholarship. Best of luck! viewtopic.php?f=26&t=17779&start=45
  6. Yes - Fingers crossed Scario. A friend of mine is 12th on the Education list... I'm thinking that's a good sign for you as the high level of people on the reversion list probably means there's a lot of reversions for Education! I'm second for sociology... I'm thinking there must be less scholarship awared in that field, as it is smaller in general then Education.
  7. I take it spin-offs are not encouraged  . I figured since the OGS thread went on for pages after pages and covered different topics, maybe we could have one specific to the reversion list.
  8. I'm fairly new to the forum, so I hope it's ok if I start a thread specifically about OGS's reversions list. My question is simple... Has anyone on the reversion list heard back from OGS yet? I know the U of T's research services said we shouldn't expect any results until July, but I'm starting to be antsy. Sigh... Athough I much prefer being on the reversion list, I wish the wait would end!

    SSHRC

totally agree. Getting scholarships is just so random! It often depends on who's sitting on the committees. A friend of mine once got a 10/30 with a perticular proposal. She was a bit upset about this, so she was hesitant to re-apply (yes, students can be a bit too sensitive for their own good). Her supervisor managed to convince her to reapply at the very last minute, My friend tried to redraft, but her supervisor wasn't happy with the new proposal, so they decided she would submit the same proposal as the year before, to the same committee (although, of course, the committee was filled with new juries). In the meantime she had published one peer-reviewed paper. Guess what, she got an award. Another case in point: three years ago, I applied and got an OGS (also got a SSHRC, so I declined the OGS). This year, I reapplied ot OGS with pretty much the same proposal, updated to reflect my advancements and with 4 publications and 5 presentations. Guess what... I didn't get it this year... but, I got a SSHRC postdoctoral fellowship for Jan :? . Academic funding will never cease to be a mystery.

    SSHRC

Might this depend on the University? I had a SSHRC at the University of Toronto (it ended this Jan). Neither SSHRC nor the University took any money for fees. Instead, the university would make a direct deposit in my account three times a year. (Jan, May, Sept). I think these were the dates that SSHRC released its funding. To find out how your university manages SSHRC funds, contact your program coordinator.
  11. You were first and you didn't get it? Bummer! Thanks for sharing though. i'm second on the list so I was really still holding on to some hope. I really need the money! Has anyone received an OGS after having been put on the reversion list? Ah well, I guess I should start applying for OSAP.
  12. Jk, I've sat as the student rep on selection committees for UofT and what I can tell you is that in my department, the scholarship committee and the admission committee are separate, with different faculty overseeing each. This might explain the disconnect between the two results. If you would still like to do your PhD at the UofT, I would contact the department to tell them that you're on the reversion lists for OGS. There's a small chance that this might help them reconsider your candidacy. (Un)fortunately, there's a whole economic side to admissions at the UofT, because of the garanteed funding.
  13. I keep checking the SSHRC thread - I think I'm as anxious as SSHRC applicants are to hear that they've gotten their results. I mean, I figure that's when the reversion lists will become active right? Note: I just finished my SSHRC funding jan 2009. Which is why I really want an OGS - else it's OSAP for me to finish the PhD ASAP.
  14. Where did you find the statistics virdisun? I wonder how many scholarships are given out in sociology. Let's hope everyone ahead of us in the rankings is so spectacular that they'll get a SSHRC, an NSHRC or whatever applies! That would be a perfect case of win-win.
  15. So glad I found this site. I just found out I'm second on the reversion list for sociology - so I think it goes by discipline... I'll call the research services of my University and see if they have anymore info. Congrats to everyone who did get an OGS!
