Congrats Phreeduh! I got into the habit of checking this thread daily just to see if your mail had come yet. I'm so glad you got it!

I'm in Victoria and I received my SSHRC MA letter in the mail today. Surprising, really. You'd think it would take much longer for letters to reach the west coast, but apparently not.

I haven't got mine yet either and I *really* want it. I, too, will post as soon as I get it.

Nope, no letter yet. I think, based only upon this thread, mind you, that they were mailing them yesterday or today. Your university knows though and in my opinion, they should darn well be telling you. One has to be tactful though. Perhaps one last appeal for mercy??

Just heard today from my advisor and grad secretary (within half an hour of each other--but kind grad secretary was first) that my SSHRC MA application was successful. Woo-hoo! I, too, was starting to wonder why I hadn't heard when I knew they knew, and feared it must be bad news. It wasn't, but I completely understand that thinking. Good luck to all who are still waiting. And Ph.D.'s--fingers crossed for every one of you also. I hope to be in your shoes someday.

All right Dood! Best news I've heard all day! Big congratulations! Let the harassment begin....

Yeah, I noticed that too. But then again, all my history and art history classes have been at least 70 percent female, and usually it's an even higher percentage than that. (In art history, it's not unusual for classes to be 95 percent female). In order to really know whether the guys are getting smoked, we need to know the female to male applicant ratio. I strongly suspect, also, that the NSERC table would be the reverse, since the sciences have a higher male participation rate. Anyone know?

Looking closely at the title of table #1, it looks like it's *not* necessarily the total number that was awarded to a particular institution. Table #1 says it's "By institution of affiliation at the time of application". What does this mean? Maybe "institution of affiliation" means the university the applicant indicated s/he'd be going to. Probably there are many other possibilities. I'm open to suggestions. Table #2 says "By institution to award". It's ambiguous, for sure, but I suspect that table 2 may be the one that gives us the number awarded to each institution.

Yeah, it's really hard to know what information to believe. We don't want to get our hopes up and then get hosed in the end, and I think that's everyone's big fear. But you know, I just find life goes so much better if I stay positive, and so I'm (perhaps naively) really happy to run with any positive info I get. I know how pollyanna that sounds, but if it works, what the heck. Sylvinka, that sucks. But it sounds like you're talking about the doctoral SSHRC? If so, I've heard that's a different ballgame where getting sent to Ottawa is just the beginning of the scrutiny. I'll admit, I've been pacing these past couple of weeks, but I'm stopping *now* and going outside to play. I'll fret over free money in the mail later. Oh, and good luck--I hope you get it this year!

For what it's worth, when I told my faculty of grad studies that I would have to "continue pacing" while waiting (seemingly forever) for the SSHRC Master's results to come out, she said that there's no need to pace, that the university recommends students for awards at the Master's level and that there is no further adjudication or competition at the national level. They do need SSHRC final approval, but she says it's pretty much for sure. So if you got sent to Ottawa, you can relax, according to her. I like her message very much and think I'm going with it!

I emailed the faculty of grad studies yesterday at my university to ask if they'd heard yet (about the MA SSHRCs), and the following is a cut and paste of her reply: "The results have been delayed this year. We don't have anything yet, but expect to hear something by the end of the month. We will likely hear first and we will advise your department immediately." Sigh....I guess we need to try to forget about it for another week yet. But come next Thursday, I'll be calling my department to see!
