  1. I will also add for those who had high GPA's and did not get an acceptance, try contacting the schools to ask why you did not get accepted. I did this last year and Western in particular was kind enough to tell me the exact reason. UofT does not give out much information but you can try to ask them if they would be able to go through your file and let you know what went wrong. This is really helpful and will let you know the things you may have to work on to make your application more competitive next year!

If anyone has other specific questions about stats or anything I did differently to get accepted this year I would be happy to share through PM.

  2. Hey everyone, been stalking this forum all year but never posted -- congrats to everyone that got accepted! I applied for the first time to UofT and Western and sadly think I have been rejected at both.  I am feeling rather discouraged, as I felt I had a strong application (but clearly not.)

For those that re-applied and were successful this year, do you have any tips on how you made yourself more competitive? I have a really strong interest in SLP and am really hoping to study and work in this field one day.

Don't worry! this was me last year. I was rejected to both schools and was extremely discouraged but I went back to school, boosted my gpa, got new clinical references, wrote a new personal statement and got into both UofT and Western this year! If this is what you want then don't give up and don't get discouraged!!

  3. I am applying at UBC, Toronto, McGill and Western Ontario but my prioroty is UBC since I live in Vancouver.

I have 100+ hours of volunteer work with SLPs, both with children and adults, and both education and medically based environments. I also have worked with the chief SLP in the Philippines at a speech clinic when I went there this Summer as well. My references are good and I think I have written a great Statement of Intent.

I only applied to UBC last year during my final year in undergrad.. but I didnt get in. The admission committee told me this was because of my academic grades for the prerequisite courses. Therefore, I boosted my GPA in my last year of undergrad to a  3.9 (which is 83.8%) but a 75% on my last 2 years. Im so worried because my grades for the prerequisite courses are still not good. They do not recommend re-taking the said courses because they said it will actually not higher my chances of getting accepted. Most linguistic courses are in the A range, but im afraid that my Statistics class is a C+ and one of my Anatomy Class is also a C. What is your opinion on this? Do all the schools actually look at the prerequisite course grades rather than the GPA?

    Thanks so much!!

    Hi!

I know that UofT for sure wants a B+ or above in all the pre-requisite courses (they told me this numerous times because I had the same issue before), but they also said they don't care if you re-take a course as long as you submit a grade of B+ or higher for each pre-requisite. I don't think it matters much for the other schools, Western didn't seem too picky about it and I'm not sure about the other schools since I didn't apply there.

  4. Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share some words of encouragement with those who were wait-listed or rejected; and for those who got into both U of T and UWO, I wanted to let you know some important things to consider in your decision making process.

To those who didn't get in this year:

I know it sucks. You've worked towards this goal for years and it hurts to hear that your work wasn’t good enough. Last year I was rejected by U of T, and wait-listed by UWO (but like everyone else on the wait-list, I didn't get in).

The main thing I want to say is to not give up. When I first found out I was rejected, I had a huge freak out, and was ready to give up. My mother had just died the month before, and I felt like the universe had suddenly turned against me. Eventually, I did a little investigating, and found out why my application was unsuccessful. It turned out that my clinical referee either secretly hated me, or had no clue how to write a good reference, because they only talked about themselves and their work for the whole letter. After finding out the specific reason for my rejection, I started to feel a bit better about it, and decided to give it another shot. I got into both U of T and UWO this year, and all I did was get a new clinical referee.

So, if SLP is what you truly want to do with your life, don't give up. Give it another shot. I was stupid, and didn’t click the box saying I’d applied before, because I thought they might look at my bad reference from last year. Apparently, clicking that box is a good thing, and for those reviewing your application, it speaks to your level of commitment to the profession. I know someone who applied 6 times before she got in. Their grades were sub-par, but their persistence really made a difference, and they were recently accepted to both UWO and U of T. So don’t give up. If this is what you feel called to do, or if it’s the only job you think you’d be happy doing, then keep trying.

Omg. I'm so happy I read this because this is the exact same reason I wasn't accepted this year. My clinical referee pretty much sabotaged my application and if I had known she would have wrote me a weak reference, I would've never asked her and who knows what my application status would have been!! I'm so concerned that they will look at my application when I re-apply and I'm hoping her reference won't play a role in my acceptance AGAIN. I was devastated when I found out I didn't get it because I knew I had a competitive GPA and great experience but when I found out it was my clinical referee I also felt a bit better (knowing that it wasn't because of my grades or anything). I'm definitely re-applying and I refuse to give up!! I'm going to have a new clinical referee though and I hope that I'm successful the next time around.

  5. Congrats to everyone who got in!

I applied to UofT, Western & McGill. I am SOOO nervous.

Does anyone know if ALL your pre-req courses have to be a B+ or above. I'm slightly concerned about one pre-req that is just under a B+, other than that my sGPA, references and volunteer experience is good. Its making so anxious because it's just one course but I don't know :(

Also, does McGill look at your cumulative GPA or sub GPA?
