  1. Anybody coming in from the Bio-linguistics' network? Chomsky, Pinker and the likes..the debates on evolution of language, adaptation versus exaptation and theories of mind ensuing there forth ?
  2. xD This thread was....entertaining.
  3. yes, been trying to get her to understand this.
  4. No, I have always corresponded with her through her gmail ID. Even as I asked her to check her inbox, she told me that she barely uses her official work ID and that I should re-send a request on her gmail ID. I reverted back saying that it's essential we give out the official id's, to which she said she checked that one as well and found no notification.
  5. Shouldn't be a problem I guess since I pretty much copy-pasted the email addresses from the recommender's academic profile pages to the list of recommenders.
  6. I think you're right. But wait..better for them? the recommender or for the adcom?(and ultimately me.)
  7. It's kind of awkward to instruct your own super. Is it necessary that emails be sent out from their official work ID's that carry host-name of the institution of which they are a part? Can't the recommendations be sent out from their gmail id's?
  8. Thanks. I'll ask her.
  9. One of my recommenders says, she hasn't been notified at all to submit any recommendation. How to deal with this? I'm continuously sending her reminders by logging in, into my application through collegeNET.
  10. I guess the structure must vary, depending on the department and University. For us, it was one year of pure course-work. We took four papers over two semesters in the span of one year - on Concepts in Philosophy, Methods in Philosophy, Self-Knowlede and Existential Phenomenology & it's engagements. Another year was spent coming up with tentative proposals for dissertation, finalising on synopsis after several presentations to the faculty and students and then just writing our dissertations (Approx. 30,000 words).
  11. Uncannily, all of this stands true for me as well, except that I hardly know anyone from my current batch (or several previous batches for that matter) who took to pursuing a higher degree in philosophy abroad. So, I am such a novice to this entire process. I got introduced to this forum by a friend and I was surprised to read the amount and level of planning/research that has gone into people's selection of college, writing samples and so many small yet significant things. But people are quite helpful around here. I got information about a bunch of scholarships programs. I am now looking into those.
  12. P:S I'm sure they won't be that quick to dismiss your score. That is why the selection process is so holisitic (writing sample, GRE's , Recommendations etc.). I don't think you have much to worry on that front I guess.
  13. I applied to Miami cuz one of the prof's research interests cohered excellently with mine. You are applying to such top-notch programs. Wish you luck. All the Best.
  14. I'm applying to The New School, University of Miami, King's and UCL. What about you?
  15. Same here. Applying from India. Have absolutely no clue how a 61% in my UG fares on the GPA scale.
  16. Do you think the general atmosphere in routine philosophy seminars, paper presentations etc is more hostile than it is in any other discipline? Since philosophy chiefly progresses by a ruthless tearing apart of arguments etc..could it be that that just intimidates women more than anything else?
  17. It's shocking if the said biases are offered by such distinguished old philosophers. It's the prime vocation of philosophy to question, introspect and abandon prejudices. I guess they aren't philosophers then, just great grand SCHOLARS of philosophy.
  18. Clearly, women are receiving quite a lot of attention, support and encouragement in academic philosophy circles etc. One wonders what then is the real real reason thats keeping the women to men ratio in philosophy so stunted?
  19. Yes there might not be a dearth, per se, but there's definitely a relative dearth, when compared to other disciplines.
  20. Hi! Thanks a lot for your encouraging reply. I'm a woman applicant from India. I have a B.A. Honours, M.A. and MPhil degree in philosophy. Slightly intimidated by the application procedure, as i have absolutely nobody to consult with. 7 years of studying philosophy in india, i haven't come across a single person who has applied abroad (or maybe a few did, but none ever shares their experiences). But I'm rapidly coming to terms with the process. I just finished applying to The New School - they have a separate support publication group for women in philosophy.
  21. The apparent "dearth" of women in philosophy echoes on this forum as well?
