  1. I backup a lot of my files on Google Drive, and my university offers every student a Box account, so I use that as well. I use Google Drive instead of USB drives now, because I've had horrible luck with those breaking on me.
  2. I just received the FLAS at University of Pittsburgh for Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian! Anyone attending Pitt?
  3. I knew my recommenders pretty well, so I sent thank you cards briefly informing them of my acceptance to the program I chose and the scholarship I was offered.
  4. Even though South Oakland is close and cheap to campus, I would suggest elsewhere. It's obnoxious and loud, but if that doesn't bother you, it's very convenient. I think a lot of graduate students look at Squirrel Hill and Shady Side, though you would have a short commute. When I lived in Squirrel Hill, the bus commute was about 15 minutes, or the walk was about 45 minutes.

  6. Is there a GSPIA (Pittsburgh) group yet?
  7. Anyone else going to grad school at Pitt starting in the fall? I was accepted into their Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) for International Development. I live in Pittsburgh currently, so I'm here all summer waiting.
  8. I can speak for Pitt's Summer Language Institute program; I took first year intensive BCS and Russian there. It's excellent and actually fun, despite the long days. Overwhelming at times. I'll be in Pitt this summer, though working for the Russian and East European center there, not taking SLI.
  9. I got an email about funding at the end of March from my assigned advisor. And I am definitely going to the open house this Friday!
  10. Oak Hill allows small dogs and has beautiful apartments, but it is more expensive than most places. It's technically in the Hill District, which has a bad reputation in the city for leading crime rates / 40% of the residents being below the poverty line. I've found that those statistics mainly refer to the central part of the Hill, while Oak Hill is on the border of Oakland and the Hill. As a young female living alone, I had zero issues in the plan. (I figured I'd warn you because when you move to Pittsburgh everyone tells you to stay away from there blah blah blah) I think Mozart allows small dogs as well, but I'm not positive about this because I haven't personally lived there. The Cork Factory in the Strip District allows dogs, but I think it's very expensive / possibly condos. In general, the neighborhood of Lawrenceville is very dog friendly, so I'm sure there would be apartments there that allow dogs. If you have a dog bigger than 30 pounds, you might have to look at apartments owned by individuals rather than companies. I have a 40-pound pit bull, so I live in my own house, since very few places would allow the breed / that size.
  11. No to Walnut Capital 100%. While their apartments are very nice and they allow dogs (which was a plus for me), I cannot recommend them. In my experience they were extremely unprofessional and not always clear on policies, and they charged outrageous fees. I agree with Espresso Shot about Lobos and Mozart, at least from common opinion in the area.
  12. Hello everyone. I'm attending the University of Pittsburgh's GSPIA program for International Development, but my area of focus is Russian and East European Studies. I also work at their Center for Russian and East European Studies at the moment. Just received a letter that I am an alternate for the 2013-2014 FLAS at Pitt. Do people ever turn down the FLAS? I'm not hopeful.
  13. I was on spring break in LA (I live in Pittsburgh), so that was nice. A rejection would have been a damper on my vacation...
  14. Has anyone heard back from GSPIA about funding yet? Waiting is killing me.
