    Ithaca, NY

hey! when i visited my friend told me to be wary about getting a place w/o seeing it first, bc there can be some crappy places-- mice, hot water problems, bad heating, etc. Things that you may not be able to see from photos... my friend has a GORGEOUS house (a real house!) but she said she looked at some 20 places first. I think i may just try to live in a 1 bedroom place and then move second semester or the next year... bc I'm iffy about going to look for a place... hmmmm J
  2. same here, I'm debating between my ideal program in a frozen, isolated location (i found TEN professors that I want to work with!!) and a non-ideal program (not much faculty interest support) in a much much better location-- nyc!!

    Ithaca, NY

I just visited last weekend. Splitting a house is the best option-- my host had a three-bedroom, giant, beautiful, hardwood floored house and the whole rent (total, for 3 people) was around $1200 (so 400/person). There are also one-bedroom apts for around 600... I think what I'm going to do is to try to join an apt or to take over the lease for a faculty member who may be on leave or something. And then make friends my first year and find a real house to be in for the next 5 yrs. unless there are people who are looking for a roommate now??! I would love to split a 2 or 3 bedroom place with someone...
  4. I don't think that's true... I just heard from a friend who got in and was notified a day or so ago, but he also was notified late of his interview. it seems rather haphazard and not organized in any chronological fashion. Maybe if you are ocncerned, just write an email re-expressing what a pleasure it was to talk to them and reaffirming your interest in the program? good luck! don't worry!!!
  5. Hi all, So, I was just curious: who here is interested in ultimately studying WGSS or queer studies? What sorts of schools/programs are you applying to, etc. Too bad a Ph.D in queer theory doesn't exist!! oh well... I'm going the complit route...
  6. Best thing to do would to order or look for the books: "Getting What You Came For" and "Graduate Study for the 21st Century" These two books will offer a realistic view of phd study in the US... read GWYCF first bc "graduate study" is super depressing (thus far) You don't need an MA to enroll in a pHD program... I only have a BA and it's fine. Yes, the admissions stats are scary, but it doesn't mean that no one gets in. Make sure your Statement of Purpose (your essay explaining why you want to go) and your writing sample are top notch. OH! and read "Gradaute Admissions Essays" by donald asher to see what admissions essays are like. I think having unique ideas that you want to pursue in graduate school as well as fit are the two top concerns. if you go online and research professors in the respective depts, you should be able ot make a case why only professor x is the ONLY person in the whole world who could illuminate your threads of inquiry, etc. etc. good luck! reading the books will help 150% i promise!!

    Cornell?

Cornell was always my first choice, tied with Berkeley. I didn't get into Berkeley either (stupid Rhetoric people!) but I'm psyched about cornell and the more I head about the city, the cooler it seems. I'm just worried about 1) if I need a car or not 2) how to deal witht he cold and 3) if I should live by myself in a studio or find friends to room with. I'm visiting next week (5-7 march) and I'm super excited about the people. And, curiously enough, Columbia is my only other top contender (Duke may also vie for a spot)... tough decisions. Post here after everyone visits-- i'm curious to hear peoples reactions! All the best, Jennie

    New Haven, CT

Hey all, I did my undergrad at Yale, and I NEVER felt unsafe there, but I would highly encourage people to take the mini bus (it's free! and you can call for door to door service!) If you want to go bar-hopping late at night, try not to walk back alone. Other than that, as long as you're not stupid about partying/going out, you should be fine. i loved living in New Haven-- there is always some sort of theatre/concert/opera going on, the city has some of the best dining in the States (I'm living in Paris now, and i can honestly say I would trade new Haven restaurants for food here) and the summers are magical-- concerts on the green, etc. The library is *ridiculous* and you can literally get your hands on a ocpy of virtually any document in the world if you want ot order it... not to mention the illuminated manuscripts or langston hughes letters that you can simply ask for and touch. I would recommend living near Wooster Square or in the "grad ghetto" (which isn't really a ghetto, just abit far) like near Church street, etc. Living "on campus" (on chapel/crown/elm) is of course more pricey, but much more convenient. made a list of my favorite restaurants for a friend who recently was accepted... best coffee: Willoughby's on Whitney avenue great food: BAR pizza (get the mashed potato pizza! they brew 6 beers in-house, the Toasted Blonde is a hit. On Thursdays the drinks are like a dollar befrore midnight) Pacifico (upscale, but GREAT drinks and spanish food) Bentara (malaysian food) in the 9th square Blue Pearl (for fondue & drinks) Nikkita (drinks) Miya's sushi (Howe st)-- after 11 PM on Thursday and Friday (I think, those are the days) you can go and order 5 giant pieces of sushi for only $2.50!! You can't pick what pieces you get-- it's sort of a chef's choice but it's ALWAYS delicious and fun to be surprised. they are sort of nouveau-sushi, like he will use artichoke and korean Kimchee and white tuna or something. but it's always delicious.Try the firecracker sake too... spicy! On Wednesdays they have like a ridiculous 10-course sushi dinner (again chef's choice) for a prix fixe. Great splurge. Mamoun's on howe st. (obviously. late night necessity! study snacks! middle eastern food) LITTLE KNOWN BUT AWESOME CHINESE RESTAURANT: on Whitney, it's way way up, past the career services building. I think it's called Great Wall or something. it looks like a grocery store, but in the back is a Chinese restaurant. And the food is unbelievably delicious and so cheap. the menu is in chinese, so the best thing to do is point and guess. Or else they have a buffet where you get great heaps of food for only like $5. Totally worth it Pot-au-Pho (vietnamese restaurant next to the Chinese place) totally affordable. other obvious ones: claire's on Chapel (vegetarian... tomato pesto pizza is awesome!) Atticus on Chapel (i pine after the black bean soup... sometimes I have dreams about it) Scoozzi on Chapel (ditto for their seasonal risottos) PM me if you have questions! good luck, J

    Ithaca, NY

How often would you say people get to NYC? I'm apprehensive about Ithaca. I lived in New Haven for 4 years for college, and I wasn't miserable in the small town/cold weather, bc there was such an active undergrad life. And I could go to NYC by train every so often, if necessary. But Ithaca seems even smaller and colder... Is there a vibrant grad student life there?
  13. I'm going to try to switch, but I'm not too disappointed.... mainly because I only have 1.5 foreign languages (French and reading knowledge of German) and I've been living and working/studyig in France for almost two years so i'm comfortable in French. And I have no real desire or motivation to learn any more languages... So I think I'm just going to accept that I should go with French

  15. Hi all, another thread... has anyone taken 2 years off before going to grad school? I have until the end of the month to decide if I want to renew my teaching contract at a high school in Paris. The students are a dream to teach, I have a virtually free apartment... and it's paris. but I received my BA in 2007 and I'm worried that delaying matriculation yet another year will make me stalled... Any adivce? J
  16. Hi, So has anyone been hearing back from complit programs? Or Berkeley Rhetoric, for that matter? I applied to complit places, but most of then have traded me to French depts, which is OK, I suppose. Does anyone have any advice? Would you take a degree in the field that you want at a lower ranked school over a degree that you don't necessarily want at a better school with more opportunities? How limiting is the actual PHD degree field? I should mention that I want to be a prof of gender and sexuality studies (via literary analysis) so perhaps my actual field isnt that important... Any advice much appreciated! J

Cornell was my second choice, so I'm happy who are you waiting on, other than Yale? and what field/century? bisous, bon courage j
