Did you future Cornell ians find a place to live? I am still homeless...
  2. I lived in Irvine for a couple of years, I don't think I would have survived without a car. It's true that you can go to the gym and do groceries without a car, but basically that's it. Public trasportation is not really an option during weekends and at night, so if you want to go to the beach/bars/restaurants you will need one. As for the housing options: after one year on campus, I moved to a nice apartment on the beach, in the quiet part of Newport. It is a bit cheaper than Irvine, and UCI has a free shuttle from NB to campus.

I have been looking on craigslist for a while but the housing situation seems a bit slow in Ithaca...
  4. I got the TMobile rechargable phone as well: I believe if you get it online you get the phone for free when buying a certain ammount of minutes. The phone is locked, so you will be able to use it only with Tmobile. Also, as nowikissyou said, it is crucial you get a debit card!!!
  5. I am from Italy and I have a lot of friends at the Politecnico. They are really happy about the school, and a couple of them have succesfully applied to top US Phd programs with a MA from the politecnico. The ones who got a phd from politecnico and are now looking for a job abroad, are not having so much luck. So I guess the ideal thing would be to have a MA from there and then go back to the US for a phd. Milan is a fun city, a bit gray and cold (yet, Ithaca is much worse)! The only problem is that the cost of living in Italy is crazy, and with the euro so high it will be even worse for Americans... Anyway, good luck!

Hello everyone, I also would be interested in splitting an house downtown. I was looking for something in Fall Creek. I am in Romance Studies...

The one I visited (Maplewood) is the ugliest grad student housing I have seen in my entire life. In general, it seems that living oncampus is not convenient. My understanding is that a nice studio downtown would be around 700$ a month...

I visited last weekend: I flew from LAX to Philly and then to Elmira (which is 30 miles from Ithaca), for 330$. The ride from Ithaca to Elmira is about 80$, so renting a car would be cheaper...
  12. I will be there as well!
  13. Hi britishstudent and cofeepot, I have not accepted the offer - I am visiting this weekend and I think I will accept right after coming back (I have turned down Columbia's offer, because I don't think I would fit as well as I would at Cornell...). Besides Berkeley - where I got rejected - I don't think there is a better school to do "theory." The only thing that scares me about Cornell is Ithaca...
  14. I have been living in the OC quite a while, and I can say that life in Irvine can be pretty depressing. Usually, people in sciences find it not so bad, but humanities grads are often devasteted by the absolute lack of any cultural life. The only nice things are the ocean and the weather...
  15. I was wondering if there are any prospective Cornellians around.. (I am Romance Studies)
