Really, it is good news. i was waitlisted at 3/10 places I applied to undergrad, and ended up attending one of them (the school I applied to ED mailed me in July being like sorry you're not off the waitlist, to which I wanted to write back "yeah guys I kind of assumed that, it's July?!?"). i think of admissions as like courtship; in both cases, "maybe" is a far cry from "no."

Can I ask what makes blanketing the top 10 a bad idea? One of my professors said "Go to a top ten program, or don't go."

On an unrelated note, I just called Michicgan's office to check if everything in my app was in, and the nice woman who picked up the phone said that the commitee reviewing applications had wrapped up last week. I thought it would be gauche to ask if that meant decisions would be coming soon, but I assume it does mean that. Good luck y'all! Also to the person going to Thailand- have fun! I taught in southern thailand last year, it was wild. Khao Lak is paradise, i'd highly recommend making a stop there!

Max is probably right; random unverified information is just that. But it doesn't seem impossible at all that Columbia admitted a few people way early in the process. Every year there have to be a few clear superstars, who every school knows will get admitted by every school, and maybe Columbia sends an early admit to them so they can have time to make the sell against Harvard or whatever. If I were Columbia, I'd do that. Med schools and Law schools operate the same way, although they also compete by throwing money at people. I don't know about you guys, but the time in between due dates and having to make a decision has so far been just awesome. I have abundant free time and, for the first time since I was a child, no outstanding obligations or projects. Between now and grad school I'm going to live it up. I hope you all do too!
