Hey guys, I'm in an MA in Hispanic Linguistics right now and I am considering to apply to some strong PhD programs in linguistics for Fall 2015. I am especially interested in departments with strong experimental phonetics and psycholinguistics specializations. Even though I know most of them are a long shot, I would say these are the institutions that go best with my interests: UCLA UCSD Stanford Ohio State MIT (not so sure) UT U of Arizona Northwestern How would you rank them? Which one do you favor and why? Moreover, I would really appreciate recommendations about other programs that could be of interest, as well as information about the acceptance rates and the admission procedures at any of these institutions. Hey guys! I'm from Spain and I'm moving to Tucson in August. I'm pretty excited about living in the US, but you know there is a lot of paperwork to be done for us international students and a lot of planning. I'm specially worried about housing in Tucson: I would like to rent a big one-bedroom apartment together with my girlfriend, and our monthly budget will be approx. 700-750$. Should I focus on private housing (craigslist and the like) or also consider the off-campus housing service? I've seen some apartment complexes in the off-campus webside that look real cool and have lots of facilities. I wouldn't mind living in one of them, but I suppose I will be able to find something cheaper if I go for private housing, won't I? Moreover, I plan to arrive early in August and I would like to know if I should have already rented some appartment or whether I'll find plenty of accommodation available by those days. I mean, will it be difficult to find good housing in August? Thank you very much for your help!

Then, how is the cultural offer in Tucson (cinema, theater, museums)? And the sporting scene (I've heard a lot about hiking)? Is Tucson bike-friendly? Or will I need a car to go anywhere?

I am a graduate student from Spain and I applied for the MA in Spanish/Hispanic Linguistics at the universities of Ohio State, Arizona and Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (recommended by a professor). I have already been admitted to Illinois and Ohio State, fully funded in both programs thanks to a teaching assistantship. I am still waiting for Arizona's answer, but I believe and hope I will at least be admitted on the same terms. Now I beg you for some help. My question is ¿What is the best option from the academic point of view (I am mainly interested in phonetics and phonology)? ¿Is Arizona's Department of Spanish at the same level as Illinois and Ohio State? I know there are really good linguists there (Simonet, Colina, Olarrea, Carvalho) but Illinois and Ohio State have amazing professors too... ¿And what about the cities (Columbus, Urbana-Champaign, Tucson)? I have read many good things about Tucson, ¿is it a good place? I've also heard that Columbus has an amazing campus but it is not so good off-campus and Champaign is really small, isn't it. ¿Which do you think is the best place to spend two years of my life doing my MA? As I am from Spain I cannot visit any institution so chosing is a difficult task... Opinions please!!! Thank you very much for your help

Basically, I am just not sure about living in such a small city as C-U, which is in the middle of nowhere...I've read some good things about the city too and I know the university is amazing (probably the best program) but I am pretty sure I would prefer a bigger city, and Tucson (500.000) or columbus (700.000) would suit me best. I do not know whether i'll buy a second-hand car or not, but I'll try and the budget thing is not so important for me. Of course, even though having international students around would be great, I do not want to stick to an international environment only.
