  1. There is still one main school I have yet to hear back from... any thoughts on emailing a professor at the school there? I should have done this much earlier, so I am wondering if it's too late now and decisions are just about made. And even if I'd done this earlier, who knows how much it would actually help, but it couldn't have hurt to try could it?

  2. Hey guys! Firstly I just got an e-mail from one of the Profs at Berkeley whom I was in touch with during applications. He said I was on the waitlist rightnow but he said I should not be too optimistic cause many professors in my field of interest are not going to accept any students to their groups due to funding situation. Bummer.. Anyways, coming to the questions, I did get in touch with many professors. Including responded ones from Berkeley, Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Cornell, UC Davis and Rutgers. Some of them responded positive some of them were just saying words of encouragement some were basically neutral. I knew from a previous Berkeley professor that its always good to contact them though... but not like preparing a standard e-mal and sending to all but rather being more personal and showing real interest. Plus, lately: although I did not applied to Drexel College, a professor offered me a position in his group and said if I decide to come he can handle the entire admission process. I guess this also shows the strength of a Professor when it comes to wanting you in his group for real... :)

Good luck! Out of curiosity, what did you put in your emails? I am considering emailing some schools at this point (that have not already sent out rejections) but am wondering how much they would look into this.

  3. Calling them would spoil the fun!  That's like finding a wrapped Christmas present on December 20th and slightly tearing the paper (or holding the present up to the light if it is white-colored wrapping) to get a glimpse of what's inside.  I'm enjoying the waiting.  I didn't apply to multiple schools for undergrad or my MS, so this is new territory for me.  Plus, I blanche at the idea of being one of the couple hundred that call an admissions office.  I know the result will arrive when it arrives and no sooner.

Haha fair enough. They may be waiting for a response from those who they have already emailed, in which case it might be a while before hearing back.

Has anyone heard from Harvard SEAS?

Not yet, though I see that some people have posted acceptances on there.

Good luck everyone! I would consider calling some of these places, but after receiving the Stanford acceptance I no longer mind waiting anymore.

  4. So...is today the day for MIT?  Or will it be tomorrow?

I know there were a few people that reported acceptance last week.  Whether or not that was everyone or just a "first wave" is unknown.  History suggests the latter.

A close interpretation of the sentence "The decision on your application is presently being reviewed and we expect [emphasis added] you will learn of the Department’s decision no later than the first week in February" leaves the door cracked that we (I) may not hear a decision by the end of the first week of February.  If the decision will come at the time the chair said it would come, there is still room for interpretation, namely three different interpretations:

    1. We will hear the decision before 11:59 p.m. tonight, the 7th day of February.

    2. We will hear back before 11:59 p.m. tomorrow night, if we assume they consider Saturday to be the last day of each week.  That would be us inserting a parenthetical of "full" between "first" and "week" in the message above.

    3. I'm having too much fun parsing the language of that e-mail from the department chair.

If you really want to know that badly, why don't you just give them a call? That will probably answer all your questions.

  5. I have no insider information, but per the letter from the department head, all decisions will be sent out by the end of the first week of February.  Examining data from years past on GC suggests not all decisions are done at once, but rather spread out a bit.

Do you think calling the admissions office might help (to see if all acceptances have already been sent out)? They did say to call about any inquiries. Either way, it seems like we are supposed to hear a response by the end of this week then (assuming they will stick to what they said in the email).

  6. Hey all, I'm an undergrad at a decent public school (probably a top 10 public school, but higher when it comes to engineering/science). I'm a chemistry major with a physics minor, and I plan to apply to grad schools in materials science & engineering (one reason I'm taking lots of physics/math is to strengthen my background for that). I will have at least 2 publications by the time I apply to graduate school (one 2nd author, one 1st author and possibly a 3rd author) and solid letters of recommendation from professors I did research with (during the school year + summer REUs), as well as good GRE scores.

My biggest worry is my GPA. I will have a 3.6-3.7 GPA when applying to grad schools, which I've heard is on the low end for the top schools (Berkeley, Stanford, UCSB, Cornell, MIT, Northwestern) that I would really like to go to. Do I still have a shot at the top schools or should I also include some sort of safety school? Thanks!
