  1. yes. I'm very excited!!! I've been rejected / didn't hear anything from other schools yet ^^~ Thanks for the advice!
  2. I finally heard my first acceptance from Cornell. Since Cornell is also my first choice, I will most probably be accepting the offer very soon. Do you guys think it's better to wait for the others though?
  3. I think Maryland has been giving out interviews and acceptances, but I haven't heard anything from them yet either..... Anyone get invited to Maryland / UCSC open houses? I just wanna know how near it is and wether or not I should still continue hoping for good news from them....
  4. hahaha....I guess we'll be hearing everything in the next 2 weeks.....hopefully there'll be some good news for everyone~~
  5. Congratulations for everyone who have heard good news.... my UT application is also just showing "in review" so far......Is there anyone who applied to Cornell?
  6. I applied to UMD, but haven't heard anything from them.....Good Luck for the interview!!
  7. I'm finishing my MA in German at the University of Georgia (in my last year). My undergrad major was Economics and I only minored in German, but I have studied at a German University in Jena for about 4-5 years (med school though, not Germanistik). So, I guess the admission committee at my university values your German ability more than your credentials. UGA also automatically offers you TAship with acceptance to the program and the department is rather small, but intimate. Turkish-German culture would fall under Sociolinguistics though, a field that is diminishing rapidly within German departments. Smaller German Departments, especially, don't really have adequate Linguists, so you should definitely ask about the Linguistics track option to the programs that you're applying to. My program also has a heavy concentration on Literature (we only have one German Linguist), so I ended up having to take extra Linguistics classes on top of my required work load to prepare me for my PhD application.
  8. My university also doesn't really allocate weekly hours. Last semester I had to teach 2 of my own classes, so I had to do everything on my own. That was 2.5 hours of class time, 1 hour office hour, about 3-4 hours of lesson planning and about 5 hours of homework grading (I taught a low level German class, so we had exams, essays and small homeworks everyday) weekly, not to mention exam making that could sometimes take up to 3 hours per exam. It was difficult, but I only have one class to teach this semester because I'm writing my MA thesis and the year before I was only TAing for professors. The department spread out the stipend, so we get a flatrate of abt $10K/year for the two years of MA program. The third semester was definitely the worst, but I feel like the program really spread things out evenly. I do agree that 10K really isn't that much though. My parents still had to pay for institutional fees at the start of every semester eventhough I live in Athens, GA.
  9. UMich sent out their rejections......I hope I will hear some kind of good news soon >.<~~ I was wondering if it means something if my major prof (also my recommender) is an alumnus (quite recent) /knows people in the linguistics department of certain universities?
  10. My situation is similar too. I was taking 4 graduate classes and teaching 2 of my own classes (as the sole instructor). I didn't have time to study for my GRE and didn't have time to research / contact the schools that I'm applying to either. I didn't even have time to finish all my own class work and grading!! Even though I applied to 11 schools, I'm feeling very skeptical! I also got a rejection from OSU, but I'm still waiting on the others. I applied to UMich too, but didn't hear back from them. And I haven't heard back from UCSC either even though some ppl have heard back from them.
