  1. Gradcafe is a wonderful place to hang out during application season. Now that we are admitted, is there a similar place for sociology students to share and discuss about coursework, researches, publications, professors, job opportunity, and....maybe gossips? You know, the "gradlife" forum within gradcafe does not specify the departments, so it would be great if there is one specially for sociology students. Besides, how many of you use researchgate and how do you feel about it? I'm trying to start but it seems a bit messy... Thank you all!
  2. Sorry, no news from me either.... I have Northwestern at my hand now, which helps to calm me down. But I still put Penn as my first choice mainly because of my boyfriend....Let's keep each other updated!
  3. I cannot log into Duke system.....== and I forgot my security questions. I guess it is a rejection, anyway...
  4. I am admitted to UCSD but gonna decline the offer soon. Good luck!
  5. Thank you ohhello and La_Di_Da for providing such useful information! That is indeed a great funding package!
  6. Thank you Joss10 for letting us know! This gives us more hope and confidence right now... To Riseofthephoenix, I also find it strange...especially on the department website, they claim that all students receive a 5-year funding package. Besides, I have received an email from the committee chair describing how the package "would look like when it becomes available". Which sounds promising. Anyway, I guess I can just wait at the moment. I wish we both get good luck, bertiek!
  7. Seems no thread for Penn yet this year....So let me open one. I'm currently on a waiting list for funding, which is driving me crazy. I think I had a crush on Penn in my senior year when visiting it for the first time, so I'm really glad to get the admission but will be desperate without funding. Penn is really nice to cover the travelling cost for visiting weekend, but I still can't go since I am 12 time zones away and visa can be a problem....It's making me more nervous. Anyway, is there anyone who is in or familiar with Penn? Is there really any student in the program without funding? Or is there any other way to cover the cost? I guess the way for me to get off the waiting list is someone declining his/her offer....So please leave a note when you decide! Ah, please feel free to talk about any other topics related to Penn.
  8. Thank you so much! Really helpful information!
  9. Madison reject here...... I guess I can focus on choosing between Penn and Northwestern now...tough one...
  10. My first question may sound stupid.....is the stipend extra to the tuition, or do we still have to pay for the tuition using the stipend? Besides, is the stipend different from the "graduate assistantship?" (http://www.tgs.northwestern.edu/financial-aid/graduate-assistantship/index.html) Is there any compulsory TA/RA work attached to the stipend? If they are different funding types, can we still apply for an assistantship when we already get the stipend? Oh by the way, dear La_Di_Da, could you please share with us when you get the feedback regarding the insurance issue? Thank you!
  11. I just checked the application system of Northwestern and surprisingly found that I have been admitted. So it is true that they don't send out emails at all...... Anyone knows about their funding policy? Does the following paragraph mean that we have to apply for funding separately? "It is important to note that by accepting our offer of admission, you are also accepting any financial award offered to you by the University. Before providing your enrollment decision, please consult the "Awards" web page and the "Council of Graduate Schools Resolution" to familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions of financial awards." UPDATE: I just found the information on the department website: I will need financial aid. How does that work? The Graduate School offers full tuition and a stipend to all students accepted to the PhD program for five years of study. Please see Graduate School Financial Aid or contact the Graduate School (847-491-5279) for the most current information.
  12. I got an admission letter from U Penn, but unlike others, I'm on a waiting list for funding. Anybody knows about their funding policy? I really cannot afford it without fundings...So I'm still quite nervous.
  13. The Davis acceptance is posted by me. I got a very brief letter from the committee chair, saying that the formal letter will be posted in the application system by next week, and the funding letter will be sent in 1 or 2 weeks, and she would like to set up a skype call with me about any further questions. It seems to be an individual mail. I thought there would be several more posts about Davis by today, but maybe they just reviewed the international students first, so please don't get too nervous~
