NYU and NYC/NJ area schools
slpgal123 replied to clydeyo12's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I haven't heard back from Seton Hall yet either, but now that I've gotten into other schools I don't think I would be willing to pay their really high tuition. I visited Montclair today, and the clinic is beautiful. I'd say I'm like 90% sure I'm going to be attending -

mystique, who did you contact at Montclair about visiting that wasn't very receptive? I'm honestly surprised, everyone I've been in touch with has been really nice and Ms. Verderosa has been trying to set up a time where I can visit and a GA can show me around. Unfortunately the time she suggested was the exact same time that I'm visiting UConn today, but none the less her efforts have been there haha. It sounds to me like you really should visit before making your decision. It's clear you really like NYU, so now you have to determine just how much you like Montclair. If you clear cut hate Montclair and loved NYU, well then I think you're going to have a hard time not going to NYU. But hypothetically if you like Montclair a lot, just a teeny bit less than NYU, you'll get to think about whether the amount more you like NYU is worth the debt. I really think you need to visit before trying to make this difficult decision though. Maybe you'll go and it'll be a clear cut decision, who knows! Off to Connecticut now for me! One of these days we'll all be decided and the stress of this process will be over . -

Congratulations clydeyo12 I know you said you were interviewing for a GA position at Kean. Do you by any chance know if they've already determined all of the people who will be considered for positions? -

Did anyone else get into Kean/is anyone considering their program? -

Supposedly M.A. is better for if you want to be in a school setting, while M.S. is better for a hospital setting. That being said it seems like whether you have an M.A. or M.S. isn't a huge factor in hiring, but I obviously don't know for sure. That's what I've heard though. And oh ok, that makes sense. For out of field around 3 years either way sounds right. And I agree, it'd be wonderful not to have to spend every summer in class haha. But I've kind of come to terms with being alright with summers (since a lot of programs I applied to require it), but I'm iffy on a whole extra semester. Not only is it extra time spent in school, but it's half a year that I'll be paying tuition instead of having a salary. I don't know... I'm undecided on how big of a deal it is to stay a little bit longer. It just seems weird to me that their program is longer, when a program like William Paterson (which doesn't seem to be the most desirable/competitive), is only 2 years. At least soon enough we'll all know what we're doing -

Yeah, I haven't heard anything about an admitted students event. I'm scheduled to go and see UConn on Wednesday, and emailed someone at Montclair and she's seeing if she can set up for the GA to show me around on Thursday. So that's what the ideal would be haha. Does it bother you at all that Montclair's program is longer? (2.5 years + 2 summers). I'll admit this is a deterrent for me as far as their program goes. -

I'm extremely conflicted and not sure... but either way I'm putting down my deposit (as terrible as that is). I have an assistantship interview in June, and if were to get it I'll pretty much definitely go. I still might go if I don't get the assistantship, but I'm not completely sure yet. I'm hopefully visiting both UConn and Montclair this week to get a better feel of both programs. How about you, have you decided between NYU and Montclair? -
Transferring State Certification

Thank you so much for all of this! I don't know why I find it so confused haha. I just don't want to make a mistake and think I'll be able to transfer my license afterwards and find out I actually can't. So thank you! -

Transferring State Certification
slpgal123 replied to slpgal123's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Thank you for all of that information, it was definitely very helpful. I tried finding the page on ASHA that specified which states have reciprocity, but I am having some difficulty. Is this what you are referring to? http://www.asha.org/advocacy/state/StateTeacherCredentialingRequirements/ I'm just having some difficulty determining that if I earn my CCC in CT, that I would then easily be able to move to NJ if I wish. I can't tell if they are reciprocal or not. Again, thank you your help! -
So I know a lot of people are not staying in their home states for grad school, so I figure this has to be a question many people have thought about. Is it generally very difficult to transfer your certification to a different state? I know supposedly some states are more challenging to transfer to than others (ex: I've heard if you don't get your TSSLD at a New York school, it's extremely difficult to get certified to work in NY). Is it always this challenging though? I'm from NJ, and my family is here. I'm considering going to UConn, but is that me essentially committing to living in CT for the years to come since that's where I would be getting certified? Or would it not be that difficult to get my certification to transfer to NJ if I decide I want to move back to my home-state after grad school? I've read through the ASHA requirements by state, but it's just not particularly clear how challenging the transfer of certification would be. If anyone knows anything about this topic all info is greatly appreciated!

I got the email from Montclair as well. But it says interviews won't be until June... when obviously we're supposed to be decided by. Like do I put down multiple deposits? The length of Montclair's program is a bit of a deterrent for me, but if I got a GA position then I think I'd probably go... ahh I have no idea what I'm doing. Also, since 3 of us on here got the email, I'm wondering how many were sent out. Like if there are 2 positions available and 50 interviewing, the chances clearly are nothing to count on. -

I'm with all of you on the rejection from Hunter! Haha. I think at this point the only school I'm waiting on that I'd consider is Brooklyn College. I've narrowed it down to Brooklyn, UConn, and Montclair at this point (if I don't get into Brooklyn then I'm down to UConn and Montclair). I'm really not sure what I'll decide; I'm extremely conflicted. I actually didn't realize until looking into it more that Montclair was a 2.5 years + 2 summers program. UConn's 2 years + 1 summer. Not sure how much that'll affect my decision, but it's a factor I'll have to think about. Gotta love this whole process haha. -

Thanks you guys . I'm really not sure, I'm surprised emails were even sent out since in the past years I only saw results on the board by mail. So I wouldn't knock out getting an acceptance in the mail if you didn't get the email. I'm hoping you guys hear good news! -

I just got into Montclair! Got an email notifying me of my acceptance and it says that my letter will be coming in the mail shortly. -

I'm hoping that they put "Decision made" once the letter is already in the mail, and that the 2 weeks is just the maximum it would take to get to people who live far away. It would be sad if the decision is made but the letters aren't actually sent out yet! Then it's impossible to predict when they will start arriving. -

My Montclair application status changed to "Decision made - allow up to 2 weeks for letter to be delivered". I'm hoping since I live only a half hour from Montclair that I'll get the letter sometime this week! *crosses fingers* -

I agree, I really think one (or more) of these schools is going to work out for you! I'm hoping we'll hear from a lot of them this week, and that you'll get some good news. I just got a rejection from Stockton in the mail also. My Montclair page still says my application is under review too. I'm hoping that changes soon! It'd be great to hear from them this week one way or another -

You definitely are still waiting on a lot, and I have a good feeling you'll end up getting in somewhere . I'm really hoping now that April 1st is going to have hit we'll start to hear from some more of these schools! The wait is getting ridiculous. -

Nope, I actually didn't know they did interviews. To be honest, I recently knocked Stockton out of my list of schools I'm considering, so if a rejection is coming that's really fine. I'm a little concerned about their accreditation standing (with ASHA listing them as an "accreditation candidate"), and I also recently realized that their program is a full 2 and a half years plus both summers. I'm ok with programs including summers, but I really don't like the idea of the full extra semester for a school that I'm a little iffy on to begin with. I've found it interesting that multiple posters kept talking about Stockton being political on the results board though.... I don't even know what that means exactly, but it's weird it kept being said! -
