  1. It's been a while since someone posted on this thread. I wonder if anyone has some new/updated information on East Lansing--? I'd personally like to know about if there have been any changes in preferred living areas, as well as what the music scene is like, whether live or recorded. Are there nice music stores you'd recommend?
  2. Sorry, Michigan State University, and I just cut and paste that other bit. UDF is University Distinguished Fellowship, and UEF is University Enrichment Fellowship. I got the UEF.
  3. This should ease your concerns quite a bit: I got a 550 V 630 Q and 4.5 AW the second time I took the GRE. (This is especially horrible considering I'm in the humanities!) I have a 3.7 GPA in my MA (this may be irrelevant, but I'll also note that my BA GPA was 2.37--yes I screwed up in my earlier years and raised it quite a bit towards the end). I got an early acceptance and fellowship offer at what is considered to be a very good school in my field, along with a paid-for trip to their recruitment event. I also got a paid-for trip to another very good school's visitation days. I don't know their decision yet, but that can't be a bad sign. I think the GRE is clearly flawed: I first took it about two years ago and have since completed an MA in English. To be honest I did only a little bit of memorizing vocab the night before. The results? My verbal went up 30 points and my writing went down half a point, while quantitative score went up 60 points. I have done NO math whatsoever for years (unless you count calculating tip at restaurants)! Isn't this screwed up?
  4. Hm, looks like no one's posted in this thread for a bit. At any rate, here are the specs for MSU: UDF and UEF recipients beginning study in 2008-2009 will receive a 12-month stipend of $24,000 plus health insurance. In addition, tuition and related fees will be waived within some limits. Fellows must maintain strong academic performance and make normal progress toward their degrees. Doctoral students receive five years of support. The first and fifth years are funded by the Graduate School, with no teaching or research service required of the student. During the second, third, and fourth years of fellowship support, students receive a departmental assistantship that may require them to assist in research and/or teaching. For the Rhetoric and Writing program, years 2-4 require teaching one class per semester. Not bad at all I'd say.
  5. Congrats dmh! I got into MSU w/5-year fellowship also, in Rhetoric and Writing. Does your department have a recruitment event coming up also? and if anyone else is interested "Finalist" at Syracuse in Composition and Cultural Rhetoric with invitation to their Visitation Days. Still waiting for responses from U of Arizona (English, RCTE), U of Michigan-Ann Arbor (Joint Program in English and Education), Penn State (English), Purdue (English), U of Washington (English), U of Wisconsin-Madison (English)
  6. Hi all, I'm not in Religion, but two people I know got into Buddhist Studies at UCB...
