Hey all, I'm not set on Emory yet, but wanted to ask about transportation. I don't drive, and usually bike or take public transportation to get around. There has already been a fair amount written about these things, but my question is this: does anyone drive scooters/mopeds around Atlanta, and specifically the Emory area? When I mentioned to my family that I would get a moped if I lived in Atlanta, they freaked. For people familiar with the city and its traffic, would you consider it unsafe to drive a scooter (probably not on the freeway or anything crazy, but just for distances over 8 or 10miles when the bus schedule isn't helpful). thanks!
  2. Hi. Northwestern is in my top three for the political theory phd work! I'd love it if peeps could share why they're choosing/might choose Northwestern for whatever field, anything about Chicago/Evanston, etc.
  3. Anybody got the word on that new UChicago result? Anyone hear from MAPSS yet? I assume my app got passed off into the MA since I never heard anything back from anyone at UC...
  4. I'm in exactly the same position, but with political theory. Does anyone out there have advice for someone trying to decide between philosophy departments and political science departments for political theory? My interests also err on the side of continental. Is there actually a difference in the degree that you come out with and your job options post grad?
  5. Hey, I was admitted to Northwestern and Notre Dame for political theory, as well as a few schools in philosophy. I have a tough decision ahead of me and was wondering if anyone else who was admitted to or applied to these schools in particular could discuss some pros and cons, why they applied, etc. thank you in advance!
  6. word. probably unlikely, but it'd also be really awesome to have two new Arendtians holding it down somewhere together. you never know
  7. the New School is probably my dream school, but didn't apply because I didn't want to be tempted to take out more loans if I got in with no funding...
  8. Right on! My main focus is Arendt, but more generally 20th century continental, esp. Derrida and Levinas, and political philosophy, esp. democratic theory. I've more or less applied to departments that have strong Arendt scholars, which has led me to some poli sci programs as well, but it'll probably come down to the phil programs. Still waiting to hear from DePaul, Emory, and Boston College! good luck!!!
  9. hai, I'm the other Oregon acceptance on the results board and also waiting to hear back from DePaul, so I guess you and I are in the same boat Philosophy88. (out of curiosity, would you mind sharing your area of interest/topic of writing sample?) I was offered a similar, if not the same, funding package and really like the idea of living in Eugene despite the fact that I'm still waiting to hear back from more competitive departments, so I can't say if I will pass on the offer or not.

A question for all you PhD folks at Oregon. I was recently accepted to a PhD program with an approximately $12,500/year ($1,400/mo. for 9months) teaching assistantship stipend. Is this pretty average from your experience? I'm not super familiar with cost of living, rent, food prices, etc. in Eugene and wonder if I would be able to get by on this amount without having to take on more work on the side. I expect my transportation expenses, etc. to be very very low, because my family lives in the area. Thank you!!
