I'm getting a 4-year funding package. Do you mean that this funding is not enough? I think that they may have funding opportunities availabe in the future that may cover my expenses in the 5th year. Is it the case?

still no news from them.

Hi, I'm looking for some opinion on the Geography program at UCSB. How do you rank their program, especially in RS and GIS fields, alongside with other programs? Opinions on their reputation in both academia and industry are welcome. Thanks.

University said my acceptance letter was an error
whatshername replied to ramswell's topic in Waiting it Out
Oh god! I am also accepted by a Phd program at UCSB with full funding recently. It is also my top choice. Your experience makes me nervous. The funding results were told by my POI. How do I double check that if they can even made such mistake in the official letter? -
Known school w/ TA-ship vs. Unkown w/ Fellowship

Does the TA-ship mean tuition waiver plus monthly TA salary? -
It means you are admitted. Congrats!

Hi, thanks for your infomation. I would like to know about the placements of UCSB masters or PhD graduates, especially in science and engineering majors(such as computer science and electrical engineering). How do people in the industry or related academic field say about UCSB graduates in general? How do people in California view about UCSB(in comparison with other UCs)? I've had the idea that UCSB is becoming much more attractive and has gained a lot of reputation in recent years(such as getting 5 Nobel Prizes within 7 years) in the academic field.

PhD at CUHK or PolyU (Hong Kong)
whatshername replied to francesca84's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Hi, I think it depends. It is true that CUHK as a whole is much more well-recognized than Poly U. But since you are pursuing a PhD degree and wish to stay in the realm of academia, it is better for you to take the professional reputation within your field of both unversities into consideration. You may check their websites or email them about the placements of their PhD alumni in order to get a better idea of your chances of getting into the academia world. As for the fact that you still don't even know who your supervisor will be at CUHK, you can actively interact with the department or even email the professor(s) with whom you share interests and communicate with them about possible opportunities to work with them. I hope it helps -
Fellowship nomination and decisions, need suggestions
whatshername replied to whatshername's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Thanks for your suggestions. I AM considering this school. And I think you are right that I should not give it up so easily. -
I was notified by one of the schools to which I have applied about a week ago of me being nominated for the university-wide fellowship (but there is no guarantee that I will be selected for the fellowship and a TA-ship will be offered instead in case I am not). The fellowship decision will not be available until March and the program coodinator indicated that I should let them know ASAP if I decide not to take their offer. The thing is, this university (School A) is not one of my top choices and I have been accepted by some other universities that are better choices for me. However, those better ones don't act as generously as this one (fellowships or even financial aids are not likely for the first year, but RA and TA positions may be available in senior years of my study). In the meanwhile, I'm still waiting for other universities to release their admission decisions (some of them won't release decisions until mid March). Because I dont want to rush into any decisions before that. Is it morally wrong to let School A wait while I'm waiting? Will it hurt (such as tarnishing their impression on my undergrad school and putting applicants from my undergrad school at adverse situations in the pool for the next years) if I finally decide to reject their offer in late march (before April 15th)?

Have you been accepted by UCSB?
-
Hey, Yale FES just updated their blog recently, indicating that they have adopted a rolling process and all admission results should be released by the first week of March. Finger crossed and good luck!

Thanks for your info ACM88. I am a little bit nervous about the results though they are not likely to be released until mid march. However, I do see one post on the result search page concerning the mem program.

Hi, I applied to their MESc program. Does anyone know any information about it? Also, I have some questions about their application status page. Unlike other application systems that I use (they have displayed the word "application is complete"), they didnt explicitly show whether my application is COMPLETE, instead, they listed a bunch of materials and showed that all of them are received. I guess the application is then considered complete, right?

I've also been accepted by the PhD program (in geography) at UCSB. Can anybody tell us more about this university or this program? Thanks
