Why would you have to pay this unless you agreed somehow to pay for the tickets in the case that you decline? I think this is a rumor. Someone pipe up if they have evidence of this. -

Accepted at Sanger Institute/Cambridge 4-year programme! The problem is that they told me I have to let them know by next Monday!?! I have interviews planned into march! I am trying to set up calls with my presumed advisor's students and talking to other people for advice. But this is difficult. -
Um. Accepted to Sanger Institute/Cambridge University 4-year program! The problem is that I have to let them know by next monday. Their system isn't like the US. You don't get until april 15th... How do I decide?

It was the only school I didn't contact professors before. It is within the cs dept and the cs programs generally don't have interviews so maybe that is why.

For CS and comp bio phd students it is very common to get internships during the summers that are fairly lucrative. It might be harder for pure bio. It is possible to find a job or consulting gig in which you further your research as well as get things done for them. But most grad schools don't let you "double dip" in terms of have a full time job and get paid by the stipend. Most schools have some clause in their official offer or grad student handbook which states that you cannot work more than x hours per week at another job. I don't know the spread on this, but I've seen x=10. I do know that stanford subsidizes housing and I assume ucsf does as well. Plenty of people make it work. I would just ask (after interviews, not at interviews) the grad students there if it is a big problem.

Congrats. See you there if we go on the same weekend. I am trying to switch weekends to go on the 23rd because march 2nd overlaps stanford.

I'm sorry to break it to you, but Harvard BIG is done. I didn't get it either. Many programs send rejections much later or not at all.

First acceptance here too. CMU-Pitt Computational Biology. No interview, just open house day. But it overlaps with stanford so I won't go then. Maybe I can visit at a different time.

MIT HST rejection. As expected. I looked at the requirements of that program and you basically do the first 2 years of med school and I already have an MD so it doesn't make sense.

Do we know much about post interview acceptance rates for computational biology programs in general? Or does it vary significantly program to program? I asked my friend who just graduated from the Stanford BMI program and she said that they do weed out a bit at interviews, maybe 50%. And I heard the same thing about Sanger from an acquaintance I have in that program. They just sent out an email cc'ing (not bcc'ing) all of the candidates about lodging for the interview so I can see there are 22 but they will also skype interview an unknown number of people. That program is 12-15/year and they will accept more than enroll of course. Anyone know about other comp bio programs?

Super weird that they would say "everyone will hear by friday" if that was the plan all along? Unless they assumed everyone would accept by friday and they could send out all rejections at that point.

woah woah woah, there was nothing racist in that. The full post was "I'm American. I'll take any advantage I can get even if it is unfair. This process is cut throat." And when I realized that it was not the most sensitive thing to say, I edited it out. I apologize, but "American" is not a race. We are a melting pot. And it is not me who is doing this biasing. It is not up to me if there is an american bias at american funded schools or not. I did say that it was unfair.
