  1. Thanks for the comprehensive reply Nick! I'm going into the direction of social media/network analysis, multimedia information retrieval, applications of machine learning, recommender systems etc. This might be the relevant qual for me at Stanford: http://infolab.stanford.edu/db_pages/infoqual.html . It doesn't look too bad (knowing ~20 papers instead of ~40 book chapters at Berkeley). Your passing rates look crazy! I haven't seen such statistics for CS at UCB or Stanford but I will ask at the visit weekend.
  2. Nick, first of all congrats on your great offers! What exactly do you mean by the cash factor between UCB and Stanford? I've been offered admission funding for CS at both places. But it seems to me they pay roughly the same and living at both places is freakin expensive... How did you figure out that the quals are so hard at these places? Reading through the requirements Stanford sounded okay (although I haven't talked to students about it, yet). Also, I think Stanford offered 3 years of funding in the letter.
  3. I think I would look at concrete advisers instead of programs. Talk to them at try to get the feeling for whether you would want to work with and depend on that guy.
  4. Honestly, I did not think of that question but I would assume so. I was very disappointed since I already have a Masters and had hopes of doing a PhD there. Also, I can't say whether that is a general statement. There is always the possibilty that this is what the professor wanted to tell me.
  5. I was unpleasantly surprised during my interview when they told me that you are not accepted straight away into the PhD program. Instead, everyone has to do a Masters (even if you already have one) and then reapply, i.e. you can't be sure about PhD admission. I wish I had known that before applying.
  6. I heard that they plan to send out all decision letters/e-mails by the end of this week. Personally, I am very excited about the e-mail I received this morning.
  7. That's an older e-mail I found. I don't think they will wait until March. I'm crossing my fingers for the next few days! Congrats souffle! Which professor contacted you if may ask? And did he/she tell you that you we're officially admitted? In that case they should be (more or less) done with the decisions...
  8. I'm checking e-mail, spam, and the results page waaay too often...
  9. Hey everybody, I am impatiently waiting for the Stanford CS PhD decisions. Has anyone heard back, yet? Or heard a specific date when they plan to get back to us? Last year, they sent out the e-mails "last Friday". Good luck to everyone!
