Canadian SLP applications thread!
junowhat replied to Inny's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Of everyone going to McGill next year, has anyone actually heard from the department yet? I created my student account and have that all set up but haven't heard a word since then. Just wondering if I'm the only one? -
I've been absent from the threads for a while but I've been keeping up with everyone. Congrats to everyone who's gotten good news! To everyone else, don't despair - I do believe everything happens for a reason. You'll end up exactly where you need to be, even if you don't know where that is yet! I officially accepted McGill's offer this morning. Looks like I will be returning to Canada after all It was very hard to turn down my alma mater but I just know this is the right decision. So excited for the upcoming adventure!!

Oops I had been checking GradCafe on my phone and now I see (from my browser) that your location is listed on the side. Sorry about that! Sounds like a plan! I'm pretty much in the same position with McGill - had to prove I'm taking one more class over the summer, then I got the confirmation from the chair of admissions, but the "recommended by department" status is still up. So glad someone else is in the same position - sounds like you're not worried at all about being admitted at this point? I just want that email to confirm that it's a sure thing, but I just can't imagine we could get this far and have them take it back. (I'm notoriously a nervous wreck about stuff like this though, so maybe it's just me.) Either way, sounds like we'll be (almost certainly) be in the same cohort! So exciting!!!! (And I'll be coming from NC so I'm glad there will be another American perspective hahah) -

Thanks for copying & sharing! Well hopefully mine will look like this within the next couple of days! I feel like if I've been approved by the department, the grad school probably just has to do routine background check type things before officially accepting, right? That's what I'm hoping. I have my heart pretty much set on McGill and I will be somewhat devastated if for some reason it doesn't go through......... -

Hey, Centcan, quick question - what does your status say on Minerva? Did you ever see it transition from "recommended by department" to "accepted" or something similar? I had to email the chair of admissions showing that I'll take that one last prereq class (I did that over a week ago) and my status still says "recommended by department" and I've gotten no official letter of anything. Starting to get nervous since I know deadlines are coming up and I just want to make my decision! -
CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I am so excited for you!!!!!!!

Thank you! It really is an amazing opportunity. I just need to treat this all as a big adventure and have faith that things always happen for a reason It's tough, but I can do that.

Haven't written too much lately but I've been keeping up with everyone - I've been thrilled with every acceptance I read about and I'm still praying for everyone who is still waiting to find out what their next year will hold.... As for me, I attended UNC's admitted students meeting and loved every minute - until they talked about financial aid. They don't have TAs and the only training grant they have right now is not available to non-Americans. Basically, it felt like all my hopes were dashed. Borrowing something like $70,000 to go to school just felt like a non-option. That was really tough, because that would be the easiest option (considering I live a mile from campus right now.) BUT.... I got an email from the chair of admissions at McGill (which is in Montreal, for anyone who hasn't heard of it) and I've been recommended for nomination to their program, so I am 90% sure right now that I will be moving back to Quebec this summer. Since I'm still technically a Quebec resident, tuition is almost 1/10 the cost. The thought of moving is terrifying, but I'm actually pretty excited because their program is amazing and their primary research interests are bilingualism and neurogenics. Regardless though, I've lived in the US since I was 10 years old and never imagined I would be moving back so this is still pretty scary.... for what it's worth, I'll essentially be immigrating to a new country and if I ever want to come back to live close to my parents and brothers, I'll have to find a job, sponsorship, apply for certification through ASHA, etc But that's okay! Trying to stay optimistic and just be grateful I even have a cheaper option. Making big changes is what grad school is all about right!? And money I will be saving will make it very worth it in the end, or so I am hoping.

Okay, well that's good to know! And yes - I'm seriously SO paranoid. Even though rationally, like everyone said here, I know I have a legit reason to call, I always picture professors thinking we're just wasting their time and then shredding my application then and there. It's so silly, but I get so nervous anyway! -

Thanks y'all (haha bringing in my Southern influence here ) I called and she said she hadn't had time to look through the emails yet. Luckily she confirmed that she had received it and that she'll reply in a day or so. So.... I'm still on the edge of my seat. But at least I know she has it, so that's good I don't remember from the introductions, but is anyone here a Quebec resident and applying for financial aid? I've started looking into it but I'd love to hear if anyone has any experience with this (or the QC government) already. -

Haven't heard back from McGill after sending them that email about proof of enrollment for my last prerequisite. I am thinking I should call today just to confirm that she got it - do you guys think so too? I hate the idea of calling and bothering anyone but there is so much at stake.... -

Aww I appreciate the support in this! I actually do love Montreal - I lived there two summers ago with my brother, just working in a coffee shop. Awesome when the weather is nice, but I think the winters are going to be a bit brutal compared to North Carolina haha... I'll definitely let you guys know when I hear officially. -

Okay... just reading that made me feel 10x better. I'm still at the edge of my seat but I'll try and calm it down for now. Thanks for letting me know (and making me feel better!!) -

So you think it's sounds like a sure thing then? I'm so paranoid I feel like I won't relax until I see it!!! :/ But thanks though! I actually just got back from a meeting at UNC Chapel Hill and basically found out I'm not eligible for any funding whatsoever, so this is quite a relief. I'm going to be really sad to leave NC but I'll consider it like a new adventure, I suppose. Fingers crossed for everyone! -

Congrats Centcan!!!!!!!!! I got an email on Saturday from McGill asking to show proof within 5 days that I will be taking my final prereq by this summer (a LING class) and that was all that was needed to extend me an offer of admission. So it sounds like I got in but the way the email was also gave me some doubt.... so I am not sure! Plus I can't actually enroll in that class until April 8th so I technically couldn't give them any proof. But I explained it as well as I could and assured I'd be taking it. Anyway, FREAKING OUT. They wouldn't go through the trouble of email me and then still decide not to take me right?!? Gahhhh What do you guys think!?! So worried. -
Thanks for the update! Very good to know.
-
I totally agree!!! I mean, for me App is 2 hours from my family and funding from there would honestly be a game-changer for me in terms of decisions. Either way though - there could be a lot more reasons, many it's not a good fit? Who knows.
-
I suppose, yea. I was hoping that by applying to a school that isn't quite as well-known that I'd have a better shot at getting funding, but I guess that isn't the case! I know they only take a certain percentage of out-of-field applicants so that could be it as well. Anyway! It's not over yet. I'm most curious at this point to see if I got into McGill.... that's the only place I'd be eligible for cheaper tuition. If that happens (and I don't receive funding offers from anywhere else), I guess I'm immigrating back to Canada! It's sort of insane to believe that's really a possibility (I've lived in North Carolina since I was 10...)

Found out I was wait-listed from App State today!! A little surprised since I applied thinking UNC-CH would be my reach school and App more of a safety. Oh well, just goes to show you, you really never know! Still waiting anxiously to hear about funding from ANYwhere. What I would do to get an assistantship at this point... :/
