  1. Unfortunately I don't have any insider info on Baltimore, but I am in the same boat as you!  I'm highly considering my offer from MICA- Hoffberger, but I am also uneasy about living in Baltimore.  I know cost of living is relatively low for a bigger city, which is awesome.  There is a thread in the "City Guide" section of grad cafe about Baltimore, but it seems most of the people on there are John's Hopkins people.  My understanding is that JHU is in the same vicinity as MICA, so most of that info is probably pertinent to us.  But I'd love to hear if any MICA peeps have opinions/tips about the city!

The immediate area surrounding MICA is fine. Have some level of street smarts and you'll be fine.

  2. MICA vs. Tyler

    thoughts?

MICA is definitely more expensive in my case (about double- 35K for tyler vs around 70K for MICA)

also who are the painters out there going to these spots in the fall?  thanks

I've talked to recent Tyler graduates who had nothing but good things to say about it. Tyler did come across as being real loose, especially in regards to the rigors, or lack thereof, of accomplishing your thesis. Although that's a purely subjective view when taking into account the drive and work ethic of the student. MICA does have Joan Waltemath as the creative director of their school of painting, and after some poking around she seems like the perfect fit for anyone who wants to improve as a painter. Obviously you can't go wrong with either so as with most decisions like this, your gut will probably push you over the edge into your final decision.

Am I mistaken or are those financial figures the tuition per year?

  3. I just talked to David Bohl with Hunter's art department and he said that basically there was just some miss-communication between them and the Admissions Office. We're still waitlisted, which I assumed, however we don't have to pay any sort of deposit. They sent them a list of all the accepted and waitlisted students so that admissions would know we've been approved so that in the case we're bumped up off the list there's not any confusion with registration later one. He said he would be in contact within the next couple of weeks to let the waitlisted applicants know where they stand, etc.

Just got done talking with Hunter and they said my application is still in progress. Have yet to receive any notification of any kind. Hmmm... April 12th is coming up and they're taking their sweet time.

  4. about MICA hoffberger notifications, do they email or mail final decision?

I was not interviewed, so I assume rejection, but got no email on Friday (march 15th)

They notified me on the 15th by phone. I don't know if all the admits are notified through phone, but official admit packs are sent out through the mail I believe on the 15th, so they'd arrive at destinations after the 15th.

  5. Making the trip to interview with them this weekend. What did they ask??

Anyone have advice as some of us prepare for Hunter's interview day this Sunday?

Tips from anyone who's gone through the process before?

How long should we expect to be there?

It was pretty straightforward. Questions on why you're interested in Hunter, explain your work, explain the relevance of art history, where you see your work going. Stuff like that. Obviously they'll probably expound on your answers and that could cause the interview to morph. For example i mentioned certain artists in my response to the Art history question and was then asked to explain how these two seemingly different artists related to each other. They could also ask you to elaborate or clarify parts of your statement of intent. Hope this helps.

  6. I must give Hunter props for actually "sparing" some of their international Skype time for us national applicants, looks like I won't have to make an impromptu trip to NY. Everyone seems to be getting at least some finality to their situations, meanwhile I've managed to apply to a combination of schools with enough rejections to still be in limbo haha. This anticipation of getting all the results in is exhausting.

  7. awesome.

they have a fantastic printmaking program.  Nicola Lopez went there.... she's one of my fav. artists.

Props on liking Nicola Lopez, she's really dope. By the way, to anyone who applied to MICA they'll be sending final decisions the 2nd week of March. As for Tyler, Rutgers, and Hunter I haven't heard anything from them so I'm assuming the longer silence doesn't bode well for my chances.

  8. hi -- some of you out there, have schools crossed off, did you already receive a letter not offering you a spot, or you've just decided not to go with an acceptance. Curious since I've applied and haven't heard anything yet from several schools, one being tyler and I just curious if they have notified everyone and since I haven't heard it probably because I'm not being offered a spot... Sorry this wait is driving me a bit nuts.

Pretty sure it's because they've been informed formally that they weren't accepted. & I'm in the same boat as far as Tyler is concerned.

  9. I just read the thread on here about how we were supposed to have official transcripts sent to Rutgers.....Well shit, I haven't done that yet. I wonder if I should bother at this point?

SIDE NOTE:  I know I'm not the first one to complain about this, but seriously- why can't there be a universal standard to this whole process????  All this checking and triple checking of what each institutions requirements are is maddening.  How amazing would it be to fill out one slideroom app with a checklist of all the school you would like it sent to, pay a fat bill and be DONE.

I completely agree! It's almost like filling out two applications per school. I hated having to go over everything a multitude of times just to be sure. This is why I was so pleasantly surprised by how efficient and streamlined MICA was. Everything on Slideroom, no fuss no muss.

And I to am hoping for a Rutgers call soon.

  10. Hello all, I was hoping someone could offer some insight into my situation. SAIC has denied me acceptance into their MFA program, yet are asking me to apply to their post bacc in studio program. Meanwhile I've already been interviewed by the Hoffberger School of Painting at MICA and am scheduled for another interview by Mount Royal School of Art at MICA. The Associate Director of Graduate Admission's whom I met during the first interview has informed me that "Congratulations on that--it is relatively rare for candidates to be selected as finalists for both programs." Obviously I have to wait to hear back from the other five schools before making a decision. My question is, how much should I be considering SAIC's post bacc program?
