2014-15 Cycle for Canadian Political Science Programs
Blake091 replied to twinsora's topic in Political Science Forum
I decided on Carleton's PhD program -
I heard back from the Political Science Department at UofT (for the PhD program) on March 10th in an e-mail from Carolynn Branton. So I would suggest e-mailing her for more information.

I talked to the grad program admin at UofT about a month ago and she said the ad com meets this week and decisions are released very soon afterwards, so either by the end of this week, or early next. -
Panic Room

The PhDs in my program (Military & Strategic Studies - which is Interdisciplinary) have had a difficult time landing even adjunct/sessional teaching positions because they're not considered qualified in the specific field even though they take the same IR/Strategic Studies Comprehensive exams as Political Science students. So yes its a thing that can be held against you in an academic job search - but that's not to say its bound to happen all the time.

Most of the PhD's I've met at UCalgary have been telling me the exact same thing, so I'm also hesitant to sign up for another 4+ years haha... I did my undergrad at Western - I approve of that choice lol. As for my PhD apps, I think Carleton is my top choice, followed by UofT and Ottawa...of course this is contingent on: 1. getting an offer & 2. the funding that comes with it!

I've heard good things about the program at Queen's particularly the support that some supervisors can give in terms of funding / research grants etc. which is good. I've only heard positive things about both their MA and PhD programs. Did you apply to any other programs?

Thanks!

Just got a positive response from the PhD program in Political Science at the University of Ottawa! So relieved to have at least one answer haha

Just got accepted to the PhD Program at Ottawa! Which is surprising because I wasn't expecting to hear back from them for another month or so! -

Yikes! I'm waiting on the PhD program at Carleton, knowing that the MA acceptances have gone out has increased my anxiety by about 100%... -
I'm not too sure about that, I e-mailed the department directly to figure that out. I'm sure you could do the same?

I spoke to the Grad Advisor at UofT, she said the Ad-Com meets in the first week of March and announcements are made that week or the next, I imagine that depends on when in the week they meet. (I posted this in the main Canadian Uni thread so sorry for any repeats ) I specifically referenced the PhD program in my e-mail but I assume they do it all in one, considering that getting the committee together is probably not the easiest thing in the world to schedule. -
Just an Update - I spoke with the Graduate Advisor at UofT in the Poli Sci department, she said that the Ad-Com meets in the first week of March and then the decisions are announced relatively quickly, either that week or the next. I imagine this is for both the MA and PhD applicants. This seems to be pretty much in line with past years' results.

Does anyone know if the Poli Sci department at UofT still uses regular mail to send out acceptances/rejections? There were a few results from past years that said they were sent via postal service...if that is still the case, I feel like it may be an agonizing wait for them to send anything out west haha. -
Look at Canadian MA programs, the vast majority of them offer some form of competitive funding packages for Master's students.

Did anyone else here apply for the Poli Sci PhD program at Carleton? My status updated this morning to "recommended for assessment" so it appears that they're truckin' along with the applications haha -
When you accidentally select to have all your correspondence with the University come in French, and have to awkwardly ask the grad studies department to change it - I don't know how well this bodes for my chances at a bilingual university haha

Big Whoop
-
Its pretty awesome, I have 0 regrets haha. I'm applying just to pure Political Science for my PhD - but yeah, feel free to DM me!
-
Yeah I did, I got into both - but the lack of funding available made me reconsider their offers. That's pretty much how I ended up doing Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary. Before oil took a tumble.. they were able to make some pretty generous funding offers hahaha
-
You're definitely not alone! I forgot how neurotic this process made me... Now that its officially February I don't anticipate it getting any better haha
-
Since deadlines are either passed, or looming in the near future I figured I'd start up this thread!

The email came the same day as my Infoweb was updated so I think that they'll get back to you asap
