  1. Hello everyone!

I applied to MA of Political Science programs at Carleton, York and UofT. I heard back from Carleton sooner than I thought but apparently they do not give any funding or RA/TA roles to international students. That's why I declined the offer. Did anyone hear back from UofT or York Pol Sci departments? I can imagine that the recent strikes affected the decision process but I feel like it would be nice to hear at least something.

I heard back from the Political Science Department at UofT (for the PhD program) on March 10th in an e-mail from Carolynn Branton. So I would suggest e-mailing her for more information.

  2. ^^ I haven't heard anything. Is this something being explicitly stated by universities / Phd graduates searchig for jobs?

As more and more schools are offering these types of programs - and calls for interdisciplinary approaches to research topics are common - That completely boggles my mind! I'm interested in hearing more if anyone has more info!!

The PhDs in my program (Military & Strategic Studies - which is Interdisciplinary) have had a difficult time landing even adjunct/sessional teaching positions because they're not considered qualified in the specific field even though they take the same IR/Strategic Studies Comprehensive exams as Political Science students. So yes its a thing that can be held against you in an academic job search - but that's not to say its bound to happen all the time.

  3. Thanks for the input Blake! Only Western. Not sure if I'm going to accept though as I'm getting told by various professors the risks in pursuing a PhD in Political Science Now. How about you what's your first choice?

Most of the PhD's I've met at UCalgary have been telling me the exact same thing, so I'm also hesitant to sign up for another 4+ years haha... I did my undergrad at Western - I approve of that choice lol.

As for my PhD apps, I think Carleton is my top choice, followed by UofT and Ottawa...of course this is contingent on:

    1. getting an offer &

    2. the funding that comes with it!

  4. hey everyone! I just got accepted into the PhD program at Queen's University for Political Science. Any advice on this program?

I've heard good things about the program at Queen's particularly the support that some supervisors can give in terms of funding / research grants etc. which is good. I've only heard positive things about both their MA and PhD programs.

Did you apply to any other programs?

  5. Does anyone when we hear back from U of T and Queen's for the M.A program?

I spoke to the Grad Advisor at UofT, she said the Ad-Com meets in the first week of March and announcements are made that week or the next, I imagine that depends on when in the week they meet. (I posted this in the main Canadian Uni thread so sorry for any repeats :) ) I specifically referenced the PhD program in my e-mail but I assume they do it all in one, considering that getting the committee together is probably not the easiest thing in the world to schedule.

  6. Just an Update -

I spoke with the Graduate Advisor at UofT in the Poli Sci department, she said that the Ad-Com meets in the first week of March and then the decisions are announced relatively quickly, either that week or the next. I imagine this is for both the MA and PhD applicants. This seems to be pretty much in line with past years' results.

  7. That still sounds like an awesome program. How did you like it? Are you applying for the GSPIA/NPSIA PhD programs now?

Do you mind if I DM you? I have a couple questions about GSPIA/NPSIA and I don't want to hijack the Canadian thread. :)

Its pretty awesome, I have 0 regrets haha. I'm applying just to pure Political Science for my PhD - but yeah, feel free to DM me!

  8. Did you by chance apply to GSPIA and/or NPSIA a couple years back? I think I recognize your username from when I was lurking through some of the older threads.

Yeah I did, I got into both - but the lack of funding available made me reconsider their offers. That's pretty much how I ended up doing Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary. Before oil took a tumble.. they were able to make some pretty generous funding offers hahaha

  9. I am waiting to hear back from York, Queen's and McGill.

It's comforting to know that I'm not alone in checking my email a lot - even though I know I won't hear back until March (hopefully!).

    Best of luck, everyone!

You're definitely not alone! I forgot how neurotic this process made me... Now that its officially February I don't anticipate it getting any better haha

  10. I didn't get a pdf yet. It only said this:
